Hi, i tried using Thunar and Nautilus as root but /lost+found remains hidden (doing ls / reveals it). How is this so?
/lost+found permissions are: "drwx------"

It's probably a design choice. The lost+found directory is only useful in one circumstance, and that one circumstance requires using a command line. There's nothing you could do with it in a graphical file manager.

And, how is it accomplissed? Why can't i see it with the file manager?

Why you can't see it, should have been answered properly.
If you though want to see it you could try to set an option like 'show hidden files'.
In Thunar this could be done via CTRL+H.

I thought the hidden files & folders start with '.' .I still don't understand why it is hidden.. What is the mechanism behind it?

Files starting with a period, and files ending with a tilde are typically hidden. Check your filemanager's source code if you want to understand how it's done.

lost+found neither starts with '.' nor it ends with '~'

Yes, but the same mechanism that hides those files, is likely the same mechanism that hides the lost+found folder.

Post 2 at http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … x-and-unix does a reasonable job at explaining it. The bottom line is it's only used by the filesystem. As a user, you have no need to access it.
