Re: Battery issues

It would also be helpful to know what your basic applications are.  By that, I mean what is your Desktop Environment, Window Manager, etc.  Some of them are much more lightweight than others.

Have you tried a "lighter" DE/WM?

I recommend dwm

What was your configuration strategy for these tools?

Re: Battery issues

I will loook into some lighter DE/WM .. but does DE take som much battery , windows seem to work fine ( and i think windows is as heavy as any other DE )

tlp .. I didnt configure anything as i dont know if it had any configuration required

for laptop-mode-tools i follwed the wiki for brightness , usb-suspend , ethernet

and powertop i used auto-tune

Re: Battery issues

You could also try Cpupower which will scale the cpu frequency.

Re: Battery issues

Do you have backlight control?

That tends to be the single biggest power drain in laptops.

Which laptop you are using?
Is it some HP?
My 4520s gives me the same issue. Under Windows, it had some HP Power manager with drivers which can save battery.
Under Linux, it works only 1.5 hours instead of 3-4 under Windows.

Re: Battery issues

If they are just sitting there with nothing running, does Gnome still eat through battery faster than Windows at the same brightness setting?

If you are saying that Gnome goes through battery faster than Windows does while you are operating it, I would believe that.  Gnome has a lot of effects that Windows doesn't have, and you can see that just by comparing start menu to Gnome's beautiful menu.  If you cycle through the features rapidly, it wouldn't be hard to believe it goes through battery faster than Windows.  Personally, when I use Gnome, I use the heck out of the SUPER key because it is one of the best alternatives to alt-tab I have ever seen, but I would guess the effects are heavier on the battery than alt-tab.

If you compare the two of them, I would argue that Gnome offers a lot more "eye-candy" in general than Windows does (assuming you are running it similar to "stock" gnome 3).
