[SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

Where should I post these kernel panics so that someone can tell me if it is new kernel bug or if my new hardware is shot?

The reason I ask is because I've just had the mainboard replaced and the new one has shown the same error while shutting down (the old one did something similar while editing a file once too).

I've now switched back to running linux-ARCH (4.0.6-1) and hope that the error doesn't appear with the "older" more stable version.

Any additional input is greatly received.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

Have you tried the usual checks such as memtest, hard disk surface scan, etc? Looks memory-ish to me but I am no expert

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

I don't think it's a hardware problem on your end, because I have experienced the same crash on the same kernel version as you.
Here is my log:

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

@red-lichtie, I have the same 2015 Dell XPS 13 laptop as you. I have been experimenting with different kernel versions in the last 2 days. I have had one hard lockup on linux-mainline-4.1-rc7 and one on linux-mainline-4.1.0-1. I can't find anything in my journal log about them.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

Since switching back to the 4.0.6-1-ARCH kernel, I haven't had any more errors.

How can I install https://www.archlinux.org/packages/test … _64/linux/ at the same time as the current 4.0.7-2 from core?

@red-lichtie, you can't easily. If the LTS kernel works for you, use that as a backup.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

I have the same issue. I am using Thinkpad X220. Kernel panics are happening only when I use a bluetooth mouse(Thinkpad laser mouse).
Today, I installed linux 4.1.1 from testing. Still have kernel panics.
My another laptop, Thinkpad X230 with Microsoft bluetooth mouse does not have this issue.
X220 has Broadcom bluetooth module and X230 has Intel's one.
So I guess that this issue is related to Broadcom bluetooth driver.

No issue on 4.0.7.

Does blacklisting the btbcm resolve the issue on the X220?

Since blacklisting btbcm stop me using a bluetooth mouse, it will prevent kernel panic.
I tried blacklisting btbcm. But btbcm is still loaded.
I added a line "blacklist btbcm" into a file under /etc/modprobe.d/.

How to reproduce kernel panic:
1. boot kernel 4.1+
2. login to gnome
3. use a bluetooth mouse
4. suspend the laptop by closing lid or by click suspend button
5. resume the laptop
6. the laptop freezes! I should press power button for 4 seconds to turn it off.

As an update, I got another freeze today even with the blacklist.

Also, per the wiki, you may need to blacklist the module a different way since it is a dependency. In the same file, use the following format to blacklist:

install btbcm /bin/false

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

I have a wired mouse lying around so I'll try blacklisting my broadcom module too. I'll also rename the firmware so that it definitely can't be loaded.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

I have experienced this panic as well in linux-4.1.1-1. I believe it has only happened to me when I was using my bluetooth video game controller. I don't think a suspend was necessary to trigger this for me. I just was playing Super Nintendo games in Higan and it crashed out of nowhere a few times.
linux-4.0.7-2 works fine under the same circumstances.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

Following up my posts above, I applied a few very minor patches to the testing/4.1.2-1 kernel and the lockups have stopped for me. I suspect the patch that fixed it was this one https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi … ea73f211da.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

I tried testing/linux-4.1.2-1 but suffered 2 more kernel panics during shutdown. It would appear that there is something very wrong with the broadcom bluetooth implementation in the kernel 4.1.x generation.

What is the best way of informing the maintainer of this module?

As I see it, the current kernel fails "testing".

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

I have submitted a kernel bug report: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101461, I think any additional input to that report would be valuable in resolving the issue.

I'll have to give it a go with that patch applied.

@bulletmark: Using stock 4.0.x, my mic isn't working (nor a one plugged into the jack). The patched 4.0.x-xps32 one works fine (as expected) and I had a working mic with the 4.1.1 mainline. I noticed that it was broken in 4.1.2 again, can you check this on your system as I think it is a regression.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

@red-lichtie both the internal mic and a plugged in mic work fine for me on kernel 4.1.2 but that is because I have applied the mic and the headphone jack patches from 4.2+. I use both mic inputs frequently because I use Google hangouts and Skype a lot, sometimes with a headset, sometimes without.

I have mentioned in other posts around here that the Dell XPS 13 mic patch was unfortunately broken in the final release of the 4.1 kernel (i.e. between 4.1-rc7 and rc8). The patches I have applied from 4.2+ to 4.1 are all tiny and are:

ALSA: hda - Add a fixup for Dell E7450
ALSA: hda - restore the MIC FIXUP for some Dell machines
dell-laptop: Fix allocating & freeing SMI buffer page
dell-laptop: Show info about WiGig and UWB in debugfs
dell-laptop: Update information about wireless control
dell-laptop: Use dell-rbtn instead i8042 filter when possible
dell-rbtn: Export notifier for other kernel modules
dell-rbtn: Dell Airplane Mode Switch driver
ALSA: hda/realtek - Support Dell headset mode for ALC298
ALSA: hda/realtek - Support headset mode for ALC298

I have done this with a PKGBUILD so I could just push this up to the AUR. The changes are appropriate to any recent Dell laptop, not just the XPS 13.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

Until I get around to that, here's a dropbox link to the kernel packages I am currently running (if you are brave enough to run a phantom kernel downloaded from the internet!). To reiterate, this is the stock arch testing/linux-4.1.2-1 package plus the small 4.2+ patches I list above.

PS: I'll add that I am using libinput now for the touchpad with this kernel and it has been fantastic. Just completely remove synaptics.conf file and let X choose libinput with default settings. Has tap, 2 taps for middle click, 3 for paste etc. Much better than synaptics and no config stuffing around.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

I've put my patched kernel into AUR4 at https://aur4.archlinux.org/packages/linux-dell/. This is the core/linux-4.1.2-2 package plus a few later kernel.org patches for recent Dell laptops like the XPS 13.

Re: [SOLVED] 4.1.x - kernel panic with Broadcom (btbcm) Bluetooth

This is working great so far, thanks!

(I had one desktop freeze but I think that has something to do with a long standing issue with the i915 and DisplayPort)

Thanks for releasing the AUR!
