I was messing with fonts, and inadvertently mesed up chrome. I dont know what caused normal web pages to use this font, and I am not able to find where to change the default font used on web pages. Have tried changing the system fonts, and also Chrome->Setting->Advanced Settings->Customize Fonts
Any help?
What it looks like now (I dont want this)

Go to Settings, look for 'Web content section' and click Customize fonts.

What DE (or other setup) are you using? Which program were you using to change the font settings? Once we know that, it should be possible to reverse the changes.

Sure. Cinnamon. all DE font changes through cinnamon settings. All chrome font changes through (Chrome)Settings->Advanced Settings->Customize Fonts

Ok. So what I would do here is start a non-cinnamon session to see whether it's the cinnamon font settings at fault. Assuming you have xorg-xinit, xorg-twm and xterm installed, you should be able to start a bare-bones session by switching to another tty, logging in and running startx. Once in that session, launch chromium from one of the terminals and have a look at the fonts. If they seem fine, then it is the cinnamon settings at fault.
Assuming the cinnamon settings are at fault, just change them back to their defaults. If you can't remember what the defaults were, open up dconf-editor and have a look under org -> cinnamon -> desktop -> interface (or something to that effect). Font settings should be under there. The highlighted keys are ones that have been changed from their default. Reset those that look relevant.

thanks @chazza.
I reinstalled ttf-ms-fonts, because I discovered that the default proportional fonts for Chrome are Times New Roman and Arial. That got the fonts back to the original (or atleast what looks original).
Strangely, I didn't have to update the Chrome font settings after I installed the above ms fonts, which suggests that these font settings are not exposed. I confirmed this by then changing the fonts in Chrome->Advanced Settings, and the fonts used didn't change again. I am referring here to the fonts used for the user name to the left of your account picture, or the fonts in the quick tiles in a new tab. I have set the font in Chrome Settings->Customize Font to Lato, but the fonts in the screen shots below look like Arial to me.
In any case, it looks OK now, so I suppose it doesn't matter so much
I am not sure how ttf-ms-fonts disappeared, or if it hadn't been installed earlier, what Chrome was using originally i.e. before I started tinkering and when it seemed normal.

Excellent, glad you fixed it. For a non-AUR solution, installing ttf-liberation do the same job as ttf-ms-fonts; it provides the free Red Hat implementations of the Sans and Serif fonts and it's what most applications on my system seem to default to.

I was about to start a thread in regards to fonts on chrome but I'll ask here instead (assuming thats OK). I've noticed that my fonts seem rather skinny/small for most things. I've checked chrome font settings and they're set to Medium font size with page zoom being 100%. Fonts seem very bare/small/skinny.
