Why Arch do this to VNC ?

[nicholas@15:58:15 ~]$ pacman -Ss vnc
extra/vnc 4.1.1-1
The original open-source cross-platform remote control solution (without
    xvnc)

It didn't include xvnc , then I can't start a vncserver

Re: Why Arch do this to VNC ?

I have already noticed that, but what if I want to use RealVnc 4.1.

Other Distros such as Gentoo ,Debian put The Whole RealVnc to their packages.

But Arch just take parts of the RealVnc , I'm quite curious about it...

Re: Why Arch do this to VNC ?

perhaps there's a reason for it.  maybe you could consider asking the package maintainer:

[root@einsiedler mark]# pacman -Qi vnc
Name           : vnc
Version        : 4.1.1-1
Groups         : None
Packager       : Damir Perisa <damir@archlinux.org>
URL            : http://www.realvnc.com
License        : None
Architecture   : i686
Size           : 734550
Build Date     : Sun Apr  3 15:17:25 2005 UTC
Install Date   : Sat Mar 25 19:36:33 2006 UTC
Install Script : No
Reason:        : explicitly installed
Provides       : None
Depends On     : x-server
Required By    : None
Conflicts With : tightvnc
Description    : The original open-source cross-platform remote control solution (without xvnc)

You could also try using ABS to build the package with xvnc in it, if you'd prefer to have it that way.

Inzju: apologies for the slightly condescending replies you've received, we don't usually treat newbies thus here.

I don't know anything about VNC or the reasoning behind this "omission" (it could be to reduce dependencies). One of the nice things about Arch is that its easy to adapt packages. If you think you're up to it, you can retrieve the PKGBUILD for the package and try editing it to include both parts of the package.

Good luck.

It isn't. x11vnc is a separate program that is run after the user logs into an X session. I have found that it is a bit flaky. I was using the vnc.so module on SuSE 10.0/.1 and loved it. I think Arch would benefit from having a package with it available. I'm currently in the middle of a tough semester with a lot of work to do, so I don't have the time to learn how to create the package myself. I added a request in the AUR requests forum, though. Hopefully someone will pick it up.

x11vnc is something like screen -x (multiple users controlling same session).
