I'm running xfce and i3, and the only way I can open windows is if I'm logged in as root, or with sudo. If I try, there are a few different reponses that I get depending on the application.
Trying to open gedit:
** (gedit:1836): WARNING **: Could not open X display
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused(gedit:1836): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
Firefox:
(process:1840): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed
No protocol specified
Error: cannot open display: :0.0
Chromium:
[1850:1850:0716/142728:ERROR:browser_main_loop.cc(223)] Gtk: cannot open display: :0.0
I have done a lot of googling on this problem, and the few threads I've found with relevant information didn't seem to help. However. I'm new to arch, and fairly new to linux in general, so I may not have been searching for the right things.

For your normal user, what is the output of:
cat ~/.xinitrc
Don't use `startx` as root.

Ah okay I think I fixed it. There wasn't actually a .xinitrc file for my normal user. I didn't realize that there had to be one for both. Thanks for the help.
