using the playback/extra keys on a midi keyboard

Hello and thanks for taking your time (trying) to help me!

I've just recently purchased a MIDI keyboard (M-Audio Keystation 88 (2014)) and after a night of tweaking I've managed to get sound of the damn thing. Here is the setup I'm using right now.

Midi keyboard is connected (via usb) to my laptop.
I use Qsynth as synthesizer (in jack mode).
I use Rosegarden as "IDE", it tells Qsynth what to do based on my input from the keyboard.
I use qjackctl to hook everything up.
I use my laptop audio-out for hearing pleasure (i know, i know, DAC-rage blabla)

As you might have noticed by now, I am completely new to MIDI (I'm a electrical engineer). And there is one feature I haven't managed to get up and running, the extra function keys on my keyboard.

My keyboard has a couple of buttons that can be handy for playing keyboard, things like PLAY, STOP, RECORD but also a  gamecontroller-like D-pad (infinite possibilities (or 2^4 har har.....)).  It would be great if I could use these buttons to control rosegarden.

But I dont know how.... and google isnt helping (I dont speak Musisian very well again I'm an engineer). So my question to you is how can i utilize my extra keys?

thing I've tried:

aseqdump -p 128

I can see "music" keys i've pressed but no function keys (logical as the MIDI protocol only covers "music" keys)

shortcut the keys as if they where regular (QWERTY/AZERTY) keys in my dm

nope didnt work.

Thanks again!

P.S. i've followed the wikia in setting it up as it is now (well exept the rosegarden part) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … using_JACK
