[SOLVED] HP Printer Issues

Hi. I've been having a bit of issue with printing wirelessly from my HP Printer. I know that there are some know issues with the HP Printer family. Some information:

System: Arch Linux
Printer: HP Photosmart c6280
Driver: HP Photosmart c6200 series PPD (from /usr/share/ppd/HP)

What I've done:

-Installed cups, ghostscript, gsfonts and libcups (and hplip).
-Modify /etc/cups/client.conf with "ServerName 192.168.1.2" (my printer's local IP address)
-Find correct driver from /usr/share/ppd/HP, remove cupsFilter line and cp into /usr/share/cups/model
-Using the CUPS web UI, add the printer (the printer is detected) and supply the PPD file when prompted (I've tried both sharing and unsharing the printer)
-Attempt to print a test page
-Eventually get the error "The printer is not responding."

I'm not terribly sure why this is happening. But here's the debug log. I couldn't find anything explicitly wrong with it.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer Issues

I had the same issues with getting my wireless hp printer (Deskjet 3050 all-in-one)  to work as well. Have you tried running "hplip -u" from terminal to add your printer using the HPLIP gui? I was able to use that to manually select the IP address of my printer and add it, and I have had no issues scanning or printing since. For some reason HP printers don't play well with cups imo.

I tried your suggestion. Manually entered my printer's IP address - the gui seemed to discover it. I added and checked the print test page box, but nothing. I even tried printing directly via USB, and still no luck. The HP tool shows that it's found my printer, but it just idles forever. Any other hints?

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer Issues

I know this doesn't address your issue, but just to add a different perspective -- my experience with a number of different wireless HP printers is that they've been among the best supported printers for Linux. These include (but are not limited to) a Deskjet 3050, an Officejet 4500, a Photosmart 5520 and the Deskjet 2546 I have now.

I hope this doesn't come across as a dumb or obvious question, but my question to the OP is have you tried simply installing the whole Cups server? That has been my approach, and I haven't had to edit client.conf, edit the HP driver, remove any lines or copy any files. From there, I've only need to follow the prompts in the Cups web setup. The only thing I've had to experiment with is choosing either the hpcups or hpijs version.

Yes, I have all of the cups packages installed, and org.cups.cupsd.service is running. Still, the printer is not responding. This is especially strange since when I boot from my Windows or Ubuntu machines (an old laptop I pulled out this morning) I can print fine to the same printer.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer Issues

Bumping because this is still an issue and I cannot fix it. Since my last update I have tried printing from the command line and from several different applications, and no luck.

-Modify /etc/cups/client.conf with "ServerName 192.168.1.2" (my printer's local IP address)

/etc/cups/client.conf is used when you are connecting to another system running a cups server which then processes print jobs without having to have cups servers running on each cups client. There is no need to do that as you are running a cups server on your own machine: remove that file.

TheRinger wrote:

-Find correct driver from /usr/share/ppd/HP, remove cupsFilter line and cp into /usr/share/cups/model

Why did you do that? I'd remove the file which you copied. Files should be automatically copied by the cups setup process into /etc/cups/ppd and modified if necessary with your settings. You should revert any changes you made to files in /usr/share/ppd/HP

I always do the setup via http://localhost:631 which has worked flawlessly and don't use the hp tools.

You have indicated that your printer has an IP address of 192.168.1.2 so what is the output of

nmap 192.168.1.2

(if you don't have it, nmap is in extra and can be installed with pacman).
This will show you what ports/protocols (lpd, ipp, etc) the printer network interface supports.

You have also indicated that you have cups installed and running, so what is the output of

systemctl status org.cups.cupsd.service

This will show you if the cups server is actively running on your machine or not.

Also what is the output of

lpstat -t

This will show you what protocol and IP address your current setup has.

I should mention here that I tried the normal method and got no help, so all of this extra stuff I did was compiled from reading other forum posts of similar issues. Regardless, I removed the files and got rid of the changes I made here.

It changes sometimes because the people I live with like to reset the router a lot, today it's 192.168.1.3. Output of nmap is:

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer Issues

OK - thanks for the info. So at this stage I guess that it's either a communications problem or a driver problem. You now have the choice of using either usb or a networking setup as the dnssd:// setup via the hp tools obviously isn't working for you.

If you are using usb, plug your switched on device into your machine and then open http://localhost:631 and go "Administration" and then "Add Printer". Enter "root" for the username and the root password. Your usb device should be shown on the list and start with "usb://". Select it and follow the dialogs through picking the correct driver for your device.

If you are using the network, you should assign a fixed address to the printer by logging into the router and configure it so the printer with it's unique hardware address is given the same IP address each time it is powered on and connects to your router for an IP address. After you have done this, power cycle the printer and make sure it is getting the fixed address. For examples sake, lets say you assign it an address of 192.168.1.100

Then go to http://localhost:631 as mentioned above and as port 9100 (JetDirect) is open, add a socket printer with the URI of socket://192.168.1.100:9100 and follow the dialogs through.

For either method, you can check the queue by using

lpstat -t

Then try sending a print job [fingers crossed!]

Holy shit, that worked! I can't believe it. I tried the network method, selecting the LPD/LPR Printer option. Your method should be added as an addendum on the arch linux wiki page as an all-else-fails sort of option. Thanks!

I'm really pleased that it worked, but there is no need for the profanity (at least not publicly)! Please remember to prepend "[SOLVED]" to this thread.
