This happens what appears to be randomly. After I close the lid of the laptop (which suspends the laptop), then open it and the login screen comes up fine. After I login the backlight level is the same as it was before, so the desktop and windows are visible, but after less than a second the backlight turn of (goes to 0). I am able to use the fn+f1 key (brightness key) to increase the backlight. Handle Display power management is turn off in the xfce power manager.
