Unfortunately I do not remember an exact update because I have been using the computer sporadically for the past month. But my mouse seems to double-triple-quad-click almost constantly. This only occurred recently. It's a Logitech M705 wireless USB mouse. I changed the batteries and that had no effect. I tried a different mouse and that also had no effect. I have looked through all the config files I can think of to find the issue, but nothing has been set with respect to the mouse.
Do any of you have the same issue? This is a laptop and I have a trackpad as well. It seems to not exhibit the problem (odd?). It is almost impossible to use an external mouse as one click could end up closing a window, then selecting something beneath it, opening it, etc.
I have tried:
differnet apps
rebooting
different USB mice
Any clues would be appreciated, as well as anyone that is having the same issue -- so at least I know I'm not insane!
Thanks in advance.
I am running OpenBox, compton, it's an Optimus laptop but I only use the nVidia card, i7 processor, 16GB RAM, Linux only (no dual boot).

UPDATE 1:
I tested all devices here:
http://unixpapa.com/js/testmouse.html
And the external mice sometimes fire multiple mouse-down-up-click events. I can get the trackpad to do it as well if I press the button and just wiggle my finger back and forth without releasing the button. It's almost as if there are too many events being fired for every click.
I am going to try a different WM/DE......

UPDATE 2:
I tried KDE Plasma and still had the same issue. I tested the mouse clicks with
xev | grep -i button
and any time I clicked the mouse button multiple click events would fire randomly (or when I altered the pressure slightly). On a wild hair, I tried disabling the touch pad (via a keyboard shortcut). This had no effect. I then decided to remove the touchpad functionality, so I ran
sudo rmmod psmouse
I retested the mouse via xev and THERE WERE NO MORE MULTIPLE CLICK EVENTS! I rebooted the machine back into my regular OpenBox environment and retested with xev -- still no multi-clicks! The trackpad works, psmouse is loaded and there is STILL NO MORE multi-clicks.
I have no idea why the issue was fixed, but I am satisfied that it is. Marking as solved.

I can confirm you are not insane. On one of my machines I had the same problem for about 2-3 month. In fact it is still there. It is a desktop with some old lenovo USB mouse and apparently most of my clicks generate multiple clicks. Being aware of the problem I tried a lot of clicks right now and it seems to be the fact that If I change the way I hold the mouse has an influence on how often multiple clicks are generated. It is a weired problem ...
