Unable to boot (mount: unknown file-system type vfat)

Hi,

I use arch linux dual booted with windows 8. I have been using this setup since 1 year and it worked fine for me. but yesterday I upgraded my windows 8 to windows 8.1.
Now I am not able to boot into Arch linux. Below is the error I get:

:: Triggering uevents....
:: Performing fsck on '/dev/sdb8'
:: mounting '/dev/sdb8' on real root
mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'
you are now dropped into an emergency shell

This usually used to happen with me when my windows used shutdown in fast shutdown mode and then I used to reboot into windows shutdown properly and things worked fine.
but this time that don't seems to work.

Any help would be appreciated

I don't use Windows, but that seems to me like it messed up your bootloader. What steps did you take after Windows upgrade? Did you try to boot from the live CD/USB and reinstall the bootloader: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_root

I'm really not sure if this works with Win8.1, but I've done it several times with different Linux distros.

No, I booted in windows and it just started upgrading after half an hour of long successful upgrade process. I tried to boot back into arch linux and It gave me this error.

I have had my partition table re-ordered whilst upgrading Windows.

From the live environment, what is the output of:

# parted -l

I note that this is /dev/sdb.  I also note that you do not seem to be using UUIDs, but rather device nodes to identify volumes.

In addition to your partition scheme, also tell about your drive arrangement.
