[SOLVED] Headphones stopped working, even in Windows.

First things first, my headphones aren't toast. I tested them on other hardware.

In the morning, I updated for the first time in a while, including a kernel update (log below).
Headphones were still working in Windows and Arch after at least one reboot each.
I tried to play TF2, but it was suspiciously slow loading, so I kill -9 ed it (it didn't go down without a fight), and rebooted.
This is when I noticed the headphones weren't working, though it's not necessarily related.
They've stopped working in my Windows 8 dualboot, as well.

Things I've checked:
alsamixer looks normal.
aplay -l: (Probably normal, but I don't know what it usually looks like.)

I haven't found any posts elsewhere of people with similar symptoms, even on other linux forums.

My memory could be fuzzy on the order of rebooting/when the headphones stopped working.

I think I'd like to try undoing the upgrade if possible, to see if that's the issue. (I think that's the most likely culprit.) Is that possible to do easily?

Re: [SOLVED] Headphones stopped working, even in Windows.

if your headphones stopped working in windows as well, I'd suggest a hardware failure of either the headphones or the headphone jack you are plugging them into.  It is pretty much impossible for a software update in linux to affect the windows install this much. FYI the lines you call attention to are normal and unrelated to your problem

Re: [SOLVED] Headphones stopped working, even in Windows.

This happened to me. I updated the kernel, rebooted and the audio on headphones was very bad, all channels were audible on both sides of the headphone. Rebooted again, no audio at all, not even on the internal speakers (i have a laptop). Rebooted to windows, no audio devices.

Something like this happened to me before when i was poking around with Hackintosh, but with the ethernet port. I solved it by shutting down the computer, removing all power, holding the power button for a couple seconds and pluging it back again.

I downgraded the kernel back to 4.1.2-2, did the power thing and it is working again.

Re: [SOLVED] Headphones stopped working, even in Windows.

I think this commit from 14 days ago is the culprit (I may be wrong though)

Re: [SOLVED] Headphones stopped working, even in Windows.

Doubt it:

A) you probably don't have a skylake processor yet

B) the commit and all conditionals specifically talk about HDMI which is probably not were you plug your headphones in nor your internal speakers for that matter

C) This commit hasn't landed in 4.1.3

Re: [SOLVED] Headphones stopped working, even in Windows.

A) The code changes don't apply only to skylake processors though.
B) It is related to hdmi, but not only to hdmi, see this
C) I'm a newbie, how do i know which commits have landed on a specific version?

Suggestions to what it may be then?

@thiagobbt, there's only the master branch (i.e. 4.2) of linux mirrored on github. You can browse commits for 4.1.y branch via http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel … stable.git

Re: [SOLVED] Headphones stopped working, even in Windows.

Whelp. A couple days a couple reboots later, everything's working fine. Not sure what it solved it. Closing now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some more information, for those stumbling on this in the future:
Lenovo Thinkpad x240
In both operating systems, it noticed that I plugged headphones in, and silenced the speakers.
I didn't try using HDMI (minidisplayport) while it wasn't working.
I never noticed bad quality sound (it just went straight to totally silent) though it's possible I missed it.
In windows, I did have audio devices. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary except that sound never made it through the headphones.

Edit: Also just stumbled upon this other thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=200090
