Does anyone know of good DVD ripping and/or copying software for Linux?

I don't think that this exists as I've gone looking before. Best bet is run dvd shrink in wine.

Yeah, I had considered that, but wasn't sure if it would work. I'll give it a shot.

Was able to get it to work a while ago though it was much slower than doing it in windows.

mencode is your friend.
there are tons of tools out there, I just don't backup DVD's much.

dvdbackup in aur works well for me. Then mencoder, ffmpeg do the transcoding
try dvdrip for GUI

Is it possible to make iso after you backup the dvd?

I personally use dvdrip from extra with great success. It was the program that completed my transition from Windows years ago.
Acidrip is also very popular (it's in AUR), a frontend to mencoder.

for me dvdshrink with wine is as fast as under windows. so, try it...
sorry for my bad english

k9copy looks quite smart ... Will test it soon.

xdvdshrink or k9copy or lxdvd for dvd 9 to 5 rip/compress/burn. Dvd::rip or acidrip for backup to avi (etc).

I'm new to DVD ripping, but I found dvd::rip a week ago and use that atm. The rip from image don't work very well though (just some perl error or something), I had to mount a loop device to get it working... And it doesn't work with VCD's either.

Which of those programs mentioned has an option to add subtitles from TXT file?

My favourite is lxdvdrip. It's a commandline program, you can find it in the AUR. It allows you to chose what audio tracks, subtitles, etc to include. I'm pretty sure it can automatically make simple menus as well, but I have not tried it.
If the video needs to shrink to fit on a DVD-R, it does the whole conversion in one pass -- it's shrinking while it's ripping directly into vob files -- meaning the whole process takes minutes instead of hours. Many tools that use the transcode tools take a long time, since each step is done sequentially. This program uses the vamps tool. (it can use transcode as well if you prefer it)

I used acidrip for ripping the unrated version of Doom and it seemed to work good.

I use acidrip to backup my DVDs and it does all I want it to do.
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

For rip DVD is best software DVDShrink but only for M$ Windows. Don´t worry this program you can run by Wine without problems

mencoder to convert to avi (I wrote a script that uses my settings, and lets me set the dvd location, title number, and target filesize).
k3b to to a one-to-one iso of the dvd.
DVD Shrink in Wine to do 9 to 5 copies (k9copy didn't work for me, but that was a while ago).
I used to use dvd::rip, but transcode gave me a lot of a/v sync issues. Then I switched to acidrip, but found it's calculations to be really buggy and resulted in stupid numbers. Thats why I wrote my own.

How long does it take to rip a dvd into a DivX or XviD video ? I've tried so many things to do it faster, but with my HP NX 9105 laptop (1.6 GHz) it does it maybe more than 4-6 hours...
That's really a poor performance I think.. And also I'm not convinced with the quality yet.. I love mencoder but to understand and make a quality film, it really forces me..

Using mencoder, on my laptop (see sig for specs), I can encode at around 35fps. So if I do a two pass encoding, generally I finish it in about 1.5x the length of the film.
Using mencoder, on my desktop (again, see sig for specs), I can encode at around 70fps. It's much nicer
Here is an example of the commands I use to rip from dvd:
mencoder dvd://8 -dvd-device /dev/dvd -ovc frameno -o frameno.avi -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=standard
mencoder dvd://8 -dvd-device /dev/dvd -alang English -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=128 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:v4mv:vqmin=2:vbitrate=1063:vpass=1 -vf pullup,pp=md,scale=640:-2 -o "/dev/null"
mencoder dvd://8 -dvd-device /dev/dvd -alang English -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=128 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:v4mv:vqmin=2:vbitrate=1063:vpass=2 -vf pullup,pp=md,scale=640:-2 -o "~/output.avi"
I made a nice script to build the commands for me, based on a few arguments (instead of the huge mencoder commands). It even calculates file splitting and video bitrate (based on target file size).

K3B can do it... actually there is even a how-to on the site:
