Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

All,

Its been three (3) weeks since I originally posted to @alexdw and @AdrianoM. In that time, I haven't experienced a since crash using either the stock Arch and/or linux-ck kernels > 4.1.3 (currently on 4.1.6-1-ck-silvermont). This is on a  Dell Latitude 3150.

What I did was:

1) Update EFI firmware/BIOS from A01-A02 for the laptop. Although I'm not sure if this directly contributed to the increased stability,  there was an Intel microcode update as part of the package. At the very least, this upgrade got rid of an annoying repeating key problem I was experiencing (and seems to be common to Dell Latitudes of various models on BIOSes early in their release cycles).

2) Stopped using my Bluetooth Logitech M557 and switched it for a Logitech AnyWhere MX (with Unified USB receiver).  Given the contributed reports in this thread, the M557 was largely behind the crashes.

Flyspray is here:

FS#45787 - [linux] Disconnecting a bluetooth HID device crashes the HID system.

And a fix for the HID driver is merged for release in kernel 4.2 (see above Flyspray).

In the meantime, either stop using your Bluetooth device(s), downgrade to a 4.0.x kernel or switch to the Arch linux-lts kernel (as @alexdw did in posts #21 and 24 above).

Halocaridina

Thanks for the update.

I can confirm that the linux-lts kernel has been stable for me for around a week now, and I have been using my Bluetooth devices (including the Logitech M557 mouse, that seems to be a particular device that can trigger the error).

Is there an easy way to know when the previously mentioned potential patch (https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kerne … ad7f9189eb) has been included in a particular kernel version (e.g. 4.1.6).

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

@alexdw

The fix referenced in the Flyspray is incorporated into kernel 4.2.0-rc6-g7a834ba:

Bug 102441 - Using a battery level reporting bluetooth mouse, system freezes during resume

So once kernel 4.2.X shows up in the Arch repo, the issue should be addressed.

Easiest thing would be to keep your system updated on a weekly schedule and switch to and test the new 4.2.X kernel when its released.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

I don't know if it still matters, but i experience that lookup as well, even with Kernel 4.1.6-1-ck (in mainline 4.1.5 Kernel as well, I have not tested 4.1.6-1 yet)
EDIT: I don't have any Bluetooth devices.
