[SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

EDIT (2015-10-04): Appears to be fixed in 4.2.x kernels.

Over the last few weeks (I think with the new 4.1.x kernels) I have been having random kernel paging errors which has caused my laptop to completely freeze (no response to either mouse or keyboard):

A couple of times I think it may have coincided with use of Bluetooth (either the mouse or my Bluetooth speaker) but sometimes it seems more random (e.g. once it happened when the laptop lip was closed - I could tell as the fan turned on and there was no response when I opened the lid).

Does anyone have any advice on how to diagnose and solve this?
Arch was very stable for me until these recent kernel updates.

This sounds similar, but seems to focus on Dell XPS laptops (mine isn't):

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

@alexdw & AdrianoM

Thank you for posting your issues with the 4.1 kernels. What you describe above sounds very similar to what I've been experiencing on a new laptop I just got (described in post #23 here at the Manjaro forums). I have a hunch that there is a major regression in Bay Trail CPU/GPU support in the kernel from 4.0 -> 4.1. I'm not familiar with the specs of your machines so could you please post the output of:

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

@AdrianoM

No problem and thanks also for your quick reply. So while we have different CPUs/GPUs and wireless cards, there is still a commonality of utilizing bluetooth (I've got a Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M557 like alexdw).

Though some of the freezes that I experienced (like with testing Ubuntu 15.04) didn't involve connecting a bluetooth device to the laptop or having anything bluetooth-related installed like bluez (besides autoloaded kernel modules).

Whatever is going on, its still a regression in 4.1 from 4.0 that is impacting a decent number of people on different hardware set-ups (which makes it harder to identify the root cause).

Luckily, I have three 4.0.X kernels that I can use with this machine; otherwise, it would be a paperweight for the time being.  Hopefully more posts come in from people to help ID the issue(s) with the 4.1.X series of kernels (which run perfectly fine on my Thinkpad T440S with an i7 CPU) on particular hardware.

I'm not familiar with the specs of your machines so could you please post the output of:

inxi -Fxz

Thanks for your reply.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

@alexdw

Thank you for the specs of your machine. So you have a different CPU/GPU and wireless card then myself and AdrianoM.

Is your bluetooth mouse connecting to the machine immediately (i.e., anywhere from 1-10 minutes according to the logs above) before the paging request error or is it really more random (anywhere from 10s of minutes to hours)? In my case, the hard freeze and paging error comes immediately (or within a minute or two) following awaking from suspend. I don't remember running into these freezes on either Manjaro or Arch in the couple of hours after the initial install (when I was configuring the systems using my M557).

Given the results, I think what you and AdrianoM are experiencing is different then my situation, with both leading to the same outcome (a hard crash from kernel paging errors). Notably, reverting to a 4.0.X kernel mitigates the problem (this is for the reference of others that might stumble upon this thread for help).

I was hoping for a common theme to emerge that might shed additional light on this, but no such luck. Fingers crossed that 4.2.X kernels behave better on our hardware set-ups (though early indications from @oberon on the Manjaro thread I reference above in post #4) suggest similar behavior to the 4.1.X kernels.

Interesting times are ahead....

My Bluetooth mouse tends to work fine for a while before the error, which is why I'm not 100% sure that it is related (though my best guess would be that it is). In the above log, I started using the mouse for a few minutes before the error.

Thanks for the information - indeed hopefully this is worked out soon; it's a very annoying bug.

If I revert to a 4.0.x kernel, can I still update normally via pacman or will Arch get confused?
Until this is fixed I think I need to revert because the randomness of the error makes the system almost unusable.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

Hmm, maybe it is related to Bluetooth:

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

There seems to be a recurring pattern:
- open the laptop lid (previously closed for a few hours);
- start using the Bluetooth mouse (seems OK for a bit);
- a minute or so later the "unable to handle kernel paging request" bug occurs (complete system freeze):
- leaving it running for a couple of minutes, the error keeps occurring but the system remains unresponsive - the only thing that happens is the fan starts running.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

I'm getting random freezes on my Lenovo X1 Carbon (Gen 2). Booting to the LTS kernel fixes the issue. I thought I'd disabled bluetooth (or at least powered it off) as I saw that happening in the journal too but still hung. I'll try it again later and see if it still occurs. I'll also try to reproduce with the steps above.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

Hey @alexdw, you can do it 2 ways. Setup your bootloader to use a different linux kernel or downgrade a package.

Install the LTS kernel:
I went with the bootloader option as it's a great way to quickly check your system without making any lasting changes and also test the one causing issues just by rebooting again. Although bear in mind the LTS version is 3.14 which is fairly old now and I lose some functionality (namely my softkeys on my X1). If you're using EFI make sure you substitute `/boot/syslinux` with `/boot/EFI/syslinux`.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/En … ts_package

Give me a shout if you need help with this as I've just done it myself.

Revert a package:
If you want to downgrade a package you can do what you're asking and add to a list to ensure it's not inadvertently upgraded again:

I don't get issues when I'm running off an external monitor? Could be because I'm not using the bluetooth mouse then I guess.

Thank you - I'll have a go over the weekend if the latest kernel update (4.1.4) hasn't fixed the issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

I'm having freezes as well on my laptop but I don't have Bluetooth so that can't be the issue.

My CPU is a Core 2 Duo P8600 and my GPU is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 which a use with the radeon driver.

I haven't used the laptop long enough with the latest kernel to see if it still happens...

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

I have also problem running kernel 4.1 but it's more complicated in my case. It occurs after switching screen from TV HDMI to laptop screen when using Bluetooth keyboard.  I don't know if it is related to Bluetooth or both in my case. I'm not sure if it was after disconnecting bluetooth keyboard (switching it off or after a few seconds from switching display). For sure there was not suspend in the meantime and I haven't closed laptop lid and the system was online all the time between changing laptop state.

I recall similar crash when I was watching something on HDMI TV screen only even without attaching BT keyboard.

For me after kernel crash any hardware buttons doesn't work at all (even keyboard backlight control).

    sie 14 23:49:28 karibon /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-x-session[999]: (II) intel(0): resizing framebuffer to 2560x1440
    sie 14 23:49:28 karibon /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-x-session[999]: (II) intel(0): switch to mode 2560x1440@60.0 on eDP1 using pipe 0, position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none
    sie 14 23:49:29 karibon /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-x-session[999]: (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
    sie 14 23:57:49 karibon kernel: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 000000190101046c

Possibly it crashes a while ago or exactly when switching off BT keyboard (not external monitor) or it is just delayed crash - I don't know.

What I can do for sure is test my laptop only with BT keyboard without connecting to HDMI.
...and it could be connected to more devices than only BT.

I'm using this kernel 10hrs a day without BT and I haven't noticed any single crash without connecting to HDMI or BT.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

I'm having the same issue, seems to be related to the BT mouse. There's a patch for what could be this problem there:

(See discussion on linux-mm http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-mm/msg92700.html)

Thanks again for the information - I'm running on the LTS kernel for now; will see if that fixes the issue until 4.1.x is patched.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

Glad to help, alexdw.

Same problem with 4.1.5. It's definitely the bluetooth mouse for me. It hung within an hour of using it but has been fine without on 4.1.5.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

I'm experiencing the same problem on my Thinkpad X1C. Only happens when I'm using my home setup which involves an external monitor and a bluetooth keyboard.
I've been using the laptop a lot 'on the go' and it has never happened then.

The LTS kernel has been stable for me - no crashes since I switched to it.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop System Freeze caused by Random Kernel Paging Errors

All,

Its been three (3) weeks since I originally posted to @alexdw and @AdrianoM. In that time, I haven't experienced a since crash using either the stock Arch and/or linux-ck kernels > 4.1.3 (currently on 4.1.6-1-ck-silvermont). This is on a  Dell Latitude 3150.

What I did was:

1) Update EFI firmware/BIOS from A01-A02 for the laptop. Although I'm not sure if this directly contributed to the increased stability,  there was an Intel microcode update as part of the package. At the very least, this upgrade got rid of an annoying repeating key problem I was experiencing (and seems to be common to Dell Latitudes of various models on BIOSes early in their release cycles).

2) Stopped using my Bluetooth Logitech M557 and switched it for a Logitech AnyWhere MX (with Unified USB receiver).  Given the contributed reports in this thread, the M557 was largely behind the crashes.

Flyspray is here:

FS#45787 - [linux] Disconnecting a bluetooth HID device crashes the HID system.

And a fix for the HID driver is merged for release in kernel 4.2 (see above Flyspray).

In the meantime, either stop using your Bluetooth device(s), downgrade to a 4.0.x kernel or switch to the Arch linux-lts kernel (as @alexdw did in posts #21 and 24 above).
