Only 4.1.x kernels report 2nd drive invalid at boot

This one is weird.

Linux-lts and all the 4.0.x kernels work fine on my 2nd drive a Samsung 850 EVO SSD.

But I cannot boot up into any of the 4.1.x kernels.  I've tried all to date.  They all fail the same way.

Grub can see the 2nd drive and loads the bootstrap from it, but when the scan for 2nd drive at /dev/sdb begins it fails. There is a complaint about ATA2.00 being unable to validate and then the system falls back into Emergency Boot mode when it cannot mount any of the partitions off the 2nd drive.  The /dev/sdb* devices are never created.

The kernel does see the first SATA drive and creates the /dev/sda* devices.

This is on an old Thinkpad T60p.

Any ideas on where to look for the issue?

In the meantime, I'm going back to 4.07.

Thanks in Advance.
