Upgrade all [solved]

So far, I have ftp installed the base packages off the 0.7.1 base install iso. Now that I have a working system and have configured dhcp, I would like to ftp install all packages in all categories. Is there a pacman command for that?

Re: Upgrade all [solved]

The "point" with Arch it to keep the installation to a minimum and only install what you need. You gain both ways, speed and HD space, plus you minimize software exploits.
If you would like a full blown distro, and very stable, try Slackware.

On second thought, in case I miss your point. If you are trying to get an easy way to update all the programs that you regularly use you may want to consider this script:

<code>
#!/bin/bash

echo "==============( Updating Programs )================="
echo
echo "Start: "
date

for PROGRAM in bluefish cssed eric hwd xorg kde k3b amarok-base gst-plugins-mad xine-lib xine-ui libdvdcss mplayer mplayer-plugin apache php mysql mod_python openssh acroread j2re openoffice-base openoffice-spell-en openoffice-spell-es gaim mc xbindkeys htop screen
do
echo +=========================+
echo "PROGRAM: $PROGRAM"
echo +=========================+
echo
pacman -Sy $PROGRAM
done

# Programs that have trouble with the about loop

echo +=========================+
echo "Program: MS-TT Fonts"
echo +=========================+
echo
sudo pacman -Sy ttf-ms-fonts

echo "All done!"

</code>

I wrote it to simplify full installs. Works the best if you have a fast connection.

Hope this helps.

Re: Upgrade all [solved]

If you need something to auto install on fresh installs, I use also a script (like ralevz's one but a bit more complicated tongue )

install-pkgs

#!/bin/sh

# Where the config files exists?
CONFIG_PATH="/home/wael/bin"

FILE1="${CONFIG_PATH}/.Install-common"
PKGS=''

if [[ ! -f $FILE1 ]]; then
    echo -e "File ${FILE1} does not exist!"
    exit 1
fi

# Remove any comment line or in-line comments
for i in `sed -e "s/(.*)#.*/1/g" -e "s/^#.*//g" $FILE1`; do
    PKGS="$PKGS $i";
done;

# Sort packages in alphabetic order...
PKGS=`echo $PKGS | sed -e "s| |n|g" | sort | uniq`

# Begin !
echo -e "I will install :"
echo $PKGS
echo -e "Continue? [y/n]";
read enter;
if [ "$enter" == "y" ]; then
    pacman -S --noconfirm $PKGS
else
    exit 1
fi

.Install-common wink a good package list for a gnome-user

# Install using :
# /home/wael/bin/install-pkgs

# List of packages with Testing and wael Enabled!
# Please add every new package to the below list

# Every packages disabled will be prefixed with ##!
# When adding packages, try not to add any of the dependecy, smaller is the list, better is the list ;)

# Also note that everything prefixed with # is a comment.
