Terminator crashing a lot in awesome window manager

I run a lot of terminals using terminator in awesome WM. For a long time this setup was great.
But now terminator would just crash on me and I'm not sure where to look for information on
what went wrong. I've tried dmesg but no information there.

rename your

.config/terminator/config

then see if it still crashes
