Xorg tries to load radeon module even with nvidia and nvidia-libgl

This machine used to have an AMD 7950 with the FOSS drivers. I have since swapped out the card with a GTX 550T and want to install the prop. drivers to get better emulator performance. I have removed xf86-video-ati, as well as the various mesa packages. I have installed nvidia and nvidia-libgl and ran nvidia-xconfig and moved/copied the xorg.conf file in xorg.conf.d and renamed 20-nvidia.conf  Whenever I reboot, LightDM fails to load, and any DE fails to load. Looking in Xorg.0.log I see

NVIDIA GLX Module 352.30
Load Module:"radeon"
Unloading module
Failed to load moule "radeon" (module does not exist, 0)
No drivers available
Fatal server error: No screens found(EE)

I have already added a "blacklist radeon" entry/line in modprobe.conf

Did you rename the original xorg.conf to something that wouldn't be picked up?

No I left xorg.conf in there, but also copied it to xorg.conf.d and renamed to 20-nvidia.conf    the nvidia-xconfig command over wrote whatever was in that xorg.conf file.
