Re: Problem with run arch after install

It looks like the Nouveau driver crashed for some reason.

- Please could you let us know: Is this a new install of Arch? If not, what have you recently changed?
- You said this happens after reboot. Does it happen if you cold start rather than reboot?
- Under Mint, please could you run

lsmod | grep -E -i 'nouveau|nvidia'

?

Re: Problem with run arch after install

Yes, it was new install of Arch from July. My hardware doesn't like new kernels so I downgrade it to v. 3.10.1. On mint I use 3.13.0-37-generic and I haven't any problems with it.

==========================================
Forgive me my mistake. I was thinking about cold start.

==========================================
Under mint:
lsmod | grep -E -i 'nouveau|nvidia'
nvidia               8660996  47
drm                   303102  5 i915,drm_kms_helper,nvidia

Under arch I was installed intel video. Under mint I have NVIDIA Driver Version: 355.06.

Re: Problem with run arch after install

It's not ideal to run an out of date kernel, as this could lead to security problems. Arch has an LTS kernel in the linux-lts package. Its current version is 3.14.51-1. The principle behind an LTS kernel is basically: "keep the features the same, but fix serious bugs and security vulnerabilities". So this is likely to be a better option than simply running an out of date kernel.

A likely difference between your Mint configuration and your Arch configuration that could result in a kernel panic is the choice of graphics drivers. On Mint, you're using the proprietary nvidia driver, but on Arch, you seem to be using the nouveau driver. Try replacing the nouveau driver with the nvidia one. See this wiki page.

You may need to blacklist the nouveau driver to get the system to a state where you can install another. Append to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf:

blacklist nouveau

You might have difficulty running a recent nvidia driver against an old or LTS kernel. I'm not sure; you'll have to try it to know.

Alternatively: Why did you install the Intel video driver on a machine that has an nvidia graphics card? Are you trying to use the integrated graphics? If so, just blacklist the nouveau driver. Then, if you've installed the Intel driver, I think this should be used instead.

I never heard about it but sounds great. I installed it and my Arch is alive! Wow! big_smile

however:
uname -a

Linux defcom 3.10.10-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Aug 30 11:30:06 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Arch doesn't use kernel lts. I suppose reason is i have not change grub config. I cannot find how do this but I will keep looking.

Like I said I have Dell Alienware and the best is issue with dedicated graphic card. Card sometimes doesn't start. Dell know this issue and have not idea how solve it.

I'm using it now but I will try to use dedicated card.

The installer image you are using must be is ancient.

Try using the current ISO image.

Re: Problem with run arch after install

My image was ok. I must downgrade kernel because my hardware doesn't like new kernel. Techmeology proposed me to install linux-lts. I was installed it under live usb  and my system rose from dead big_smile I believe that installation was good and change something because before I did it my arch was dead and i couldn't load system.

Now I'm looking way to boot with linux-lts. Yaourt see that package like installed. Headers of course too but my laptop start up with old kernel.

Re: Problem with run arch after install

If you're using GRUB, just update the configuration file and the new kernel image will be detected and a menu entry will be created for it.

Re: Problem with run arch after install

I use GRUB2 and update-grub doesn't work.

Arch Wiki have based on GRUB and menu.lts. It's was replaced in GRUB2 by grub.cfg and i can't find place to change kernel.

==========================================

mkinitcpio -p linux-lts

==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux-lts.preset: 'default'
  -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-lts.img
==> ERROR: specified kernel image does not exist: `/boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts'
==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux-lts.preset: 'fallback'
  -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-lts-fallback.img -S autodetect
==> ERROR: specified kernel image does not exist: `/boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts'

Linux-lts was really installed correctly?

Yes but you can download it from yaourt update-grub. I think this is nevermind. I tried mkconfig-grub -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg but it doesn't print nothing about LTS kernel.

mkconfig-grub -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Re: Problem with run arch after install

No, this is not solve problems with graphic card.

Yesterday I tried install graphic driver from nvidia site. (v. 552.30) It's the newest stable driver for my card (nvidia gtx 765m). After installation and reboot I have only black screen and after few seconds I seen console. When I uninstalled it everything back to norm.

Somewhere I have seen forum topic close to this issue. I will look it today.
