the home dir shuffle

I want to reinstall, due to a new (to me) dvd drive I installed that I can't seem to configure correctly, it recognises it is there, but it won't read media or recognise blank media. It's a hp dvd writer 300 or somesuch. Anyways, to combat this, I was wondering how to reinstall without losing my home dir.

Is /home on a seperate partition?  If so, when you reinstall, don't point to or include that partion.  After installing the base and rebooting, edit fstab to include the partition containing /home.

Re: the home dir shuffle

Why do you think reinstallation could solve this issue? I fear you'ld have much work and the same result.

I have similar issues with a sata dvd recorder, and it is a curse. Do you use dbus / hal to mount the device? Then try it manually, deactivate dbus and hal.

How is your fstab? Do you use iso9660,udf as formats? Try iso9660 only, this could help on some disks.

Re: the home dir shuffle

Update: I checked around and it is a common problem with the drive itself, just going to order a new one. Thanks anyways.
