How can I set the browser that Thunderbird uses to open links in e-mails?

I did it by installing the AboutConfig extension, and setting the value of network.protocol-handler.app.http and network.protocol-handler.app.https to 'firefox'.

you don't need the extension, though. just put the 2 keys into the user.css in your thunderbird profile dir.

not in user.css but in user.js

New versions of thunderbird allow you to edit these preferences without digging in config files or installing an extention.
Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General tab > "Config Editor" button
Then just add the necessary keys from there.

Thanks Cerebral - that's good to know.
While we're on the topic, those keys have always worked fine for me, except for one little niggle - I click the email link, it opens in a new Firefox tab, but without focus. Thunderbird retains focus, which I'm used to now, but it's still annoying. Any tricks for that, folks?

In kde 3.5.2 firefox gets on top after clicking a link. I think after upgrade 3.5.1 -> 3.5.2 it started to be so.
Try to check it from the command line. Execute firefox any_link.com In KDE i get firefox on top with any_link.com trying to open.

I don't use KDE, but I tried it from CLI anyway. The result is the same - URL opens in a new tab, without focus.
And just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, "on top" and "with focus" are two separate characterisitics. My new tabs, as described, open "on top" i.e. they are the only window I can see. However, they are without focus i.e. focus is retained by the application that launched the new tab.

For people who used the config editor in Thunderbird: was there already a network.protocol-handler.app.http and a network.protocol-handler.app.https string to be defined? I had to add the strings myself (which you can do by right-clicking) and then set their values.

That's right, jmags - they're not there by default.
