[SOLVED]Problem with X server, DPMS, and KVM switch

I had been using Debian Jessie for some time, then I decided to give Arch a try.  In Debian, this just worked without issue on the same hardware.  Under Arch, if I switch to my other KVM switch slot, DPMS kicks in on the
monitors and never comes out.  I have to log in via e.g. tty1 or SSH to restart my display manager (lightdm), losing whatever I had open at the time.  I've tried both the nouveau and nvidia drivers
with similar results.  Actually, under nouveau I can't even switch to a virtual terminal (tty1-6), I have to log in via SSH.

I've examined my Xorg.log.0 before and after switching the KVM, and I don't see anything relevant to power, or display disconnect.  Journalctl and dmesg don't show anything I can see either. In
X.org.log, I can see the displays (and my keyboard and mouse) being reconnected (displays are DFP-0 [left] and DFP-1 [right]), but the monitors remain in standby mode (orange LED rather than blue).
Here's what I got:

BEFORE:
dmesg:

Re: [SOLVED]Problem with X server, DPMS, and KVM switch

I found a workaround, use GNOME instead of Xfce.  That is not satisfactory, however, because GNOME 3 or Classic lacks the easy customization, and I haven't yet reworked my XMonad configuration to work with GNOME.

Still looking for a solution.  I've noticed that the output of "udevadm monitor" doesn't show any events for the graphics card.  Neither "nvidia*" or "card*" show anywhere, it's all about the many USB devices that get hotplugged when switching sources with the KVM switch (which has a USB hub with at least my keyboard, mouse, and printer connected).  I think that's a clue;  if I could get the events to show, then I could trigger ?randr or like commands.

I still don't know what it is, though.  It could be xscreensaver, I'll have to try replacing it with xlock or some more basic screen locking program.  I've tried so many things I can't be sure whether I've already tried that.

Can you get the output of "xrandr -q" and "xset q" via SSH?  (It might be necessary to set the DISPLAY variable manually.)

I think  this might be a known issue in Xfce - these are linked to in the Wiki:

These are the current states of these, when the problem has not yet been triggered (due to reboot, or restart of lightdm):

xset -q:

Keyboard Control:
auto repeat: on key click percent: 0 LED mask: 00000000

                        9fffffffffffffff
                        fff7ffffffffffff
bell percent: 50 bell pitch: 400 bell duration: 100
Pointer Control:
  acceleration: 2/1 threshold: 4
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
  timeout: 600 cycle: 0
Colors:

Font Path:
  /usr/share/fonts/misc/,/usr/share/fonts/TTF/,/usr/share/fonts/OTF/,/usr/share/fonts/Type1/,built-ins
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 600 Suspend: 1200 Off: 1800
  DPMS is Disabled

I think xscreensaver ignores the base Xorg DPMS setting with "Quick Power-off in Blank Only Mode", since I just blank the screen (I'll stare at screensavers too long, no matter how simple, if it's not just a blank screen).

These look promising, but I don't have time right now to explore them.  One thing I'm stuck with, my NVIDIA card only has DisplayPort outputs, since that's the only inputs my KVM switch has.  The cables to the monitors are DP->HDMI.  Found out the hard way that HDMI->DP doesn't work.  HDMI->DP adapters are prohibitively expensive last time I checked, but this setup has been working for some time.

Re: [SOLVED]Problem with X server, DPMS, and KVM switch

Found this which appears to work:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1508996. Only, it's not meant for production yet.  I will still need to test some more, to see if it sticks.

Re: [SOLVED]Problem with X server, DPMS, and KVM switch

So, the patched versions of software linked by foutrelis in the link above worked.  I have a minor issue with xfdesktop doing the wrong thing, but I don't need that so I can kill that pretty easily (from terminal:  "xfdesktop --quit").  The only problem is the context menu is no longer available on the desktop then, but I don't need that, either (XMonad being a tiling window manager, unless there are no windows in the workspace, I can't see the desktop anyway).
