On a new install (on a new HP laptop) reboot or shutdown never finish and system hangs.
First idea was that something is wrong with acpi. Uninstalled without any effect
Second idea was that systemd screws up smth because a parallel installation of the latest mint linux does not have this problem. Check here http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/sy … /#index2h1 with the conclusion that it is a kernel issue. Additionally on the kernel shutdown the last message is actually that the system has reached target shutdown, so it is not a systemd issue.
The only really suspicious stuff in the log is provided below but google did not show up any direction for further steps. Downgrading the kernel is always a brute force solution but maybe there is a more elegant one. So the last hope for is here... (or is it in the kernel subforum?)
ps. BIOS update, according to the log of changes, is not supposed to help

Try the LTS kernel.

Hm. Does not help. Now I am really confused.
It is not acpi, not systemd and not kernel.
However linux mint is fine.
So it is an arch problem (the install is clean).
But where else can the issue be?

First idea was that something is wrong with acpi. Uninstalled without any effect
Just un-installing the acpi package does *not* disable acpi.
Try booting with this kernel parameter:
acpi=off

I had the same issue on an acer laptop. Tried everything, nothing worked.
Finally I tried to install again on UEFI instead of Legacy, problem solved.
See if it helps

acpi=off actually kills the keyboard. at least.
then I saw that during the boot I get a very strange message which looks like an error but is not highlighted anyhow in the log:
Sep 07 19:50:23 localhost kernel: intel_soc_dts_thermal: request_threaded_irq ret -22
as for UEFI I can hardly figure out a connection (linux mint works just fine on the same setup while arch with lts kernel does not) but I will try it. who knows...

I tried arch installation CD which is uefi. And I tried both shutdown & reboot. The system hangs in both cases.
While my conclusion is that it looks like a very low level arch issue I have no clue how to proceed. Shall I move it to the kernel forum here?
