external docking station / external gfx problems

Hi,

I'm pretty new to the Arch ways and although I've been using linux for a few years, I am still very novice on the possibilities and freedom it provides.
I am a happy owner of a Sony Vaio VPC-Z21, and a external docking station specific for this device.

I have been trying for ages to get the external docking station to work with Ubuntu but that didn't seem to go well (note that this was already 2 years ago).
I've now installed Arch on the device and I hoped it would automagically work. Surprisingly some features do work, but the most important one does not.

The docking station enables the user (that's me!) to connect another set of monitors to it. Being able to connect a monitor directly to the laptop as well, this will give you the possibility to work with 4 monitors at the same time (onboard screen counts as well!). The external docking station contains a ATI gfx card, I believe something in the HD6xxx series.

When I have the laptop on, and connect the docking station, my shell terminates and restarts. I can get to login and I see new devices such as network and usb ports. Connecting a monitor to it will not work. Using arandr I will see nothing.

When I have the laptop off, and connect the docking station, my laptop tries to boot arch, but will fail. I do not know where it fails at. All I know is that I passes the GRUB boot loader, passes the journalling check (or whatever it is doing to my RAID1 config) but then it will enable all the connected monitors (including the monitor connected to the docking station) but will only show a black output.

I've searched a lot on the interwebs and I know it's possible. For example it now works with Ubuntu and Mint as shown here: https://lists.launchpad.net/sony-vaio-z … 03069.html
Also, I've installed the sony vaio power tools, but this did not work in my favor. I've found a package called hybrid-video-ati-intel, but I read something about a overheating issue.
Wiki pages like https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hy … e_Graphics and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME are mostly visited by me at this point but I do not understand everything that it's trying to explain...

My questions to you are:
- What am I missing to be able to correctly use my docking station, both when connecting it while the laptop is powered on and off;
- What is the status on the compatibility of the hybrid graphic card setup of Intel with ATI, where ATI is not only used for hardcore 3D rendering and offloading Intel, but to extend the dashboard;

I kindly thank everyone in advance.

Kind regards,
Caroga
