2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

After discussion with the maintainer of -nitro, Tiger683, both -archck and nitro have ceased development, to allow co-operative development of a single patchset.

That single patchset has arrived, -beyond. Beyond will have both, a stable (ArchCK/CKO like) branch, and an unstable (nitro like) branch available via git very soon.

The beyond stable tree is a patchset based on the CK patchset. It aims to include a variety of popular features and updates that have not yet made it to the vanilla kernel, while remaining relatively stable. Con Kolivas' CK patchset is the most important part of beyond stable tree, as it provides the great interactivity and responsiveness improvements that it is noted for.

The first beyond patchset release is available on the temporary website: http://iphitus.loudas.com/beyond.php

As with ArchCK, beyond will be in the repositories. I have uploaded 2.6.16-beyond1 to [testing].

The kernel modules for beyond will be released over the coming week.

mkinitramfs
2.6.16-beyond1 is depending on a newer mkinitramfs release, also in testing. Please note that this new release uses a different name for the initramfs it generates. I would particularly like to hear from encrypted, reiser4 and raid root users, to know how well it works for them.
More documentation, is on the wiki here under '1.4': http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Initramfs

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

I built 2.6.16-beyond1 earlier today on Arch64 and I'm running it now fine. I used the older mkinitramfs to generate my ramdisk and so far everything is working. I had problems with nvidia and nforce but they are well documented online and I found working patches for both.

Not really a question, just a "it's working here, nice release iph" post smile

Great work iphitus.
Tried it out and had a problem, it crashed with an error. Something like:
Out of memory ()
I will get the exact message later.

That'd be great, and any context, 10 lines before/after, etc, when it happened, etc.

Though it sounds more like it's going to be a userspace problem.

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

Ok, got the error, the stuff before it goes by really fast, theres no time to copy it down. This error then keeps repeating over and over till i reboot.

out of memory: kill process 2 (migration/0) score 0 and children
out of memory: kill process 2 (migration/0) score 0 and children
out of memory: kill process 2 (migration/0) score 0 and children
out of memory: kill process 2 (migration/0) score 0 and children

I do have a software raid setup with reiser4 on it but its not my root device.

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

WHen in the boot does that occur? early? late? after it's started anything? do you see it loading modules before that at all? is the screen running at a vesafb resolution rahter than ugly huge normal?

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

ok, the screen is running vesafb. it sets up my raid, says something about reiserfs (my root filesystem is reiserfs) and then it starts going really fast and ends at the error.

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

let me check...
also onw thing, when i build the mkinitramfs image, i cant pass any options, it just shows the help stuff. it only works if i do:
mkinitramfs kernel=2.6.16-beyond

mkinitramfs kernel=2.6.16-beyond --full doesnt work,

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

ok, i think i narrowed down the problem. I got it too work after i took all the raid stuff out of mkinitramfs.conf and rebuilt the image. So it all works now, just my raid isnt started on boot. Also the error showed up before udev.

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

I installed the new mkinitramfs, and then kernel26beyond, but it didnt create the initramfs image. It just showed the initramfs help message (as when you run it without options):

<snip>
installing kernel26beyond... done.
>>> Generating initial filesystem. Please wait...
/sbin/mkinitramfs kernel [options]

kernel={version} specify kernel to build initramfs for

  Options:
--config=FILE read FILE for configuration settings
</snip>

and I had to create the initramfs manually.
Anyway, going to reboot now smile

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

Yeah, I made a mistake in the post install script for beyond. New mkinitramfs up which has fixed all the bust up parameters, and will cause beyond to not crap out that message when it's installed.

Sputnik: Could you try and disable raid entirely in your initramfs using 1.4-3 which ought to be on ftp.archlinux.org/ real soon?

Sure but i got it working without raid using 1.4-2. So i guess the problem is raid.

without raid it works.

with raid and initramfs --full, it doesnt work. get the same error. but i do see my raid being started.

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

I also switched to beyond. Everything is working fine here after manually running mkinitramfs and installing the newest ipw2200-firmware. I'll try making an ati-fglrx-beyond PKGBUILD but it doesn't compile yet. It's missing Makefile.lib.c in /usr/src/linux-2.6.16-beyond/scripts. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Cheers Sigi

btw. Thanks for your work iphitus!

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

Sorry to bother...this looks very much like the problem here...
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=20118

I hope this gives some hints for future development...cause I would also like to try out the new kernel. Well, I guess I would have to learn too much about initramfs....dont have the time.

Working perfectly!!!

and seems to have cured the random freeze I use to get with the stock kernel and archck....

Grab any patches you like. I'll be releasing broken out tarballs a little later on, when ive had time to mess with git.

I think that the development integration archck-nitro is a very important news, a sort of milestone in the intricated history of kernel patchsets. Just thanks.

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

Everything running like a charm here. What a great job iphitus (et al)!!!

I'm using reiser4 in /home and /var partitions and ext3 in root partition. I tryed to switch to reiser4 in root some time ago (with kernel26archck) without luke, it would be nice to know that booting from a reiser4 partition is working well with this kernel.     big_smile  big_smile  big_smile

Is there going to be an ati package for the new beyond?

Re: 2.6.16-Beyond1, ArchCK, mkinitramfs update.

Everything works great for me except the background image for the terminal.  There is an error saying /etc/splash/darch/1280x800.cfg cant be found.  However, the file is there and the splash loads after udev starts (By the way,t he progress bar now works for me, never has before.)

Not a big deal though.
