[SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

I am also struggling with the audio but that is for another time; please help, I don't want to go back to Ubuntu and I need to get this working as it is my work machine. I have installed the following package(s):

xf86-input-synaptics
gpointing-device-settings //read somewhere that it might contribute

but it doesn't work in X (herbstluftwm/i3). Invoking:

synclient TouchpadOff=0

returns

'Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?'

Earlier this week after breaking free from Chrome OS I installed Arch and the touchpad worked for a while but then stopped working; I read somewhere that invoking 'poweroff' might cause problems with touchpad to function. But this is a fresh install (yesterday) after going through a bunch of other distros (couldn't install Slackware, 'fdisk' didn't see the disk); among them only Ubuntu 14/15 and (I think) Archbang managed to get it to respond.

I would mostly need it for browsing the web (decently - I have already installed 'links') but I do need it for that.

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

Please post the output of cat /sys/class/input/event*/device/name
How are you starting Xorg?  Do you know how to find your Xorg logs?

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

Thank you for your response; here is the output of cat /sys/class/input/event*/device/name:

AT Translated Set 2 keyboard
Lid Switch
Power Button
Sleep Button
Sleep Button
Power Button
PC Speaker
HDA Intel PCH HDMI/DP,pcm=7
HDA Intel PCH HDMI/DP,pcm=3
HD WebCam

I start the Xorg with startx; I located the Xorg log.

Could you post the log?  That list of event devices does not look encouraging.

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

Yeah, it is not seeing it.    What kernel are you using?  ( uname -a  )

Edit.  Never mind.  it is 4.0.   What if you upgrade to 4.2 (in testing)?
Edit: Or at least to 4.1 in core?
Edit:  Actually,  how about a full pacman -Syu

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

@ewaller

[ 4436.953] Current Operating System: Linux acer 3.14.51-1-lts

On an unrelated note it does seem to be missing the xf86-video-intel package as it is falling back to the modesetting driver.
Is the xf86-input-synaptics package installed?

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

loqs is right; it's the LTS kernel; I can't run the current kernel without chroot (it fails initializing stuff and halts). I will install the xf86-video-intel package, but the synaptics package is already there.

Do you know which kernel versions the the distros that could use access the touchpad were using or even better have an Xorg log from one of them.
Also is the touchpad showing up via lspci or lsusb?
Might be worth starting a separate thread ( if you have not already done so ) to address the issue with the 4.1 kernel as driver support may have been added since 3.14.

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

Unfortunately I don't remember the kernel versions; I have installed Arch, Ubuntu 14/15, Archbang and tried Ubuntu 12, Back Box, Crunchbang, LXLE plus, perhaps, up to two others --in the past few days.

Here is the output of lspci:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series SoC Transaction Register (rev 0e)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display (rev 0e)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series USB xHCI (rev 0e)
00:1a.0 Encryption controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Trusted Execution Engine (rev 0e)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series High Definition Audio Controller (rev 0e)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Atom Processor E3800 Series PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev 0e)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Power Control Unit (rev 0e)
01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 6b)

and lsusb:

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 8087:07dc Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1bcf:2c67 Sunplus Innovation Technology Inc.
Bus 001 Device 011: ID 3538:0054 Power Quotient International Co., Ltd Flash Drive (2GB)
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I don't know what I should exactly be looking for.
I'll reinstall Ubuntu to see what is the kernel it settles for; I noticed it was downloading another kernel but don't remember the version.

Edit: That download was after the fact but I'll check the kernel version anyway.

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

My touchpad stopped working in graphical sessions a few days ago too on my Dell Latitude 3540.
What's weird is that in GDM and gnome-shell in wayland mode it is working, while openbox and gnome-shell are not.

The problem is not related to kernel version (both LTS and "classic" are not working correctly)

xorg-server 1.17.2-4
xf86-input-evdev 2.9.2-1
xf86-input-libinput 0.14.0-3
xf86-input-synaptics 1.8.2-2
libinput 1.0.1-1

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

I am not sure how relevant this might be but just before the display goes offline when I shutdown, it also throws this message (modulo punctuations maybe):

[{some number}] cgroup: option or name mismatch: new 0x0 "", old 0x4 "systemd"

Just one line.

Edit: literal correction.

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kerne … s/v3.14.51
notice no elan_i2c* files in 3.14.51
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kerne … ags/v4.1.6
they are present here 4.1.6
according to http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/MOUSE_ELAN_I2C.html
found in Linux kernels: 3.19, 4.0–4.2, 4.2+HEAD

from the ubuntu 3.19 dmesg

[ 25.344186] elants_i2c i2c-ELAN0001:00: nothing at this address
[ 25.370464] i2c-ELAN0000:00 supply vcc not found, using dummy regulator

and then 2 lines later

[ 25.616551] input: Elan Touchpad as /devices/platform/80860F41:00/i2c-8/i2c-ELAN0000:00/input/input6

So what I think is missing is kernel support in 3.14 for the i2c interface that connects the trackpad to the motherboard.
What I do not know is was the code for elan i2c actually added in 3.19 or was it simply refactored into its own module then.

Ioqs, thank you so much! I am downloading the 4.2 kernel and try to build and install it --never done it before but breaking things should be easy.

I have it just compiled if you want, but it did not fix my problem sadly.

There is a touchpad visible to xorg which it is not for dioib.
twix if the touchpad also shows in the output from

cat /sys/class/input/event*/device/name

Then I would say it is a different issue

You're right, while the touchpad is not responding and not found by synclient, it is recognized by Xorg.

Sorry for the noise

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

First and foremost: thank you loqs for your patience and help; I really appreciate it.

I did the following and got the touch back:

- Started with the LTS version (3.14.51-1-lts) since the current version can't reach the login prompt. I presume I could chroot but I didn't want to explore all the possibilities.
- Followed the instructions on Kernels/Compilation/Traditional and built (from 4.2.0) upon my LTS .config file (next step).
- Used make nconfig since it's mentioned that it automatically takes care of dependencies; I added the following on top of LTS:
    - device drivers/input device support/mice/ELAN I2C trackpad support/..
    - device drivers/platform support for chrome hardware/..
    - firmware drivers/google firmware drivers/..
Here '..' stands for 'choosing everything in that branch' (I used 'M' where applicable).
- Followed the rest of instructions on Kernels/Compilation/Traditional.

Not all of those modules might be necessary though; I have not experimented with that since I have other hardware problems as well.

@twix: this might work for you too. And thanks for trying to get me out of this situation.

Now I need to see if I can get the audio back; I haven't got to HDMI support yet.

Nice smile  Not many newcomers jump right into a custom kernel.

You can see which modules actually get loaded by the kernel using lsmod.  It will help you determine which modules are needed and which are not.  Once you work that out, I suggest you file a bug against the Arch Kernel and ask for those modules to be included and the indicate hardware that requires it.

Re: [SOLVED] Touchpad not working (on Acer CB3-111)

Thank you ewaller; I didn't want to surrender to Ubuntu's initial convenience, my machine doesn't take it well with only 2 GBs of RAM; that was the main reason I broke free from running linux under Chrome OS (thanks to John Lewis) --besides the scary boot screen.

Figuring out which module is which is going to take me a while, but I will. Here is the output of my lsmod BTW:
