Checking a new hard drive

Hi,

I'm struggling to clone my system to a new hard drive. I partitioned (GPT) my new 3Gb hard drive, cloned the system partition about 30Gb and set about cloning my home partition as big as the rest of the drive. It took more than 3 hours, and at 95% clonezilla announced a bad sector. I couldn't even figure out whether it was a source bad sector or otherwise. Nevertheless, clonezilla kept on fighting, eventually arriving at some sort of success. So I have no idea whether my target system would be usable or not.

What is the right way to handle the situation?

Re: Checking a new hard drive

Check the output of smartctl to see if it provides any clues. If I had to guess I'd say the bad sector is on the source drive.

After you figure out where the error is you will have to check if that sector belongs to any file, in which case that file will be corrupted and you should restore it from backups.

Drive errors may have been logged in the journal.
