Boot does not complete after fresh installation

Hello everyone,

I recently made a fresh re-install on my Dell Studio 14z.  I went through the current installation procedure.  Once I properly strapped the system and I reboot, I can get to a login prompt, but only the first time.  Any reboot after that will jam while initializing the services.  I see all the systemd messages and nice green OK, but at some point in the process, everything just stops.

The only hint that anything might be wrong is the message "i8k : unable to get SMM Dell signature".  I doesn't sound like a fatal error to me...

The system rarely stops at the exact same place which make it hard to identify a specific cause.

I tired booting with the installation USB stick, chrooting and looking at journalctl.  Nothing wrong is logged.

It feels like a hard-lock, but it could also be that the system is not responding to any input at that point.

I also tried to repeat the installation procedure from scratch a couple of time to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything, but the issue is 100% repeatable.

Could someone give me some pointers on how to further diagnose this?  Is there a way to increase systemd's verbosity?  Is there a step-by-step mode or anything like that?

Thank you in advance for the help!

Re: Boot does not complete after fresh installation

I modified the kernel's command line in syslinux and added "init=/bin/bash" and I got a working shell.  At least, now I know that it isn't the kernel hard-locking.
