emerald0.9 doesn't work here

I'm trying to use Compiz 9 with emerald. Compiz itself works flawlessly, however I don't have decorations, because emerald (and emerald-theme-manager for that matter) crashes with SIGSEGV (Address boundary error).
I ran
strace emerald-theme-manager
and here is the result:

Others report that emerald is working for them, so this must be something with my configuration.
The same problem happens when I run compiz standalone, or do compiz --replace in KDE4 or Lxqt.

UPDATE: I also tried with a completely new home directory.
