Basically after 10 minutes of inactivity I have set the screen to turn off. The screen actually fades to black but doesn't turn off. The backlight is still on and there's the mouse cursor in the middle of the screen.
By pressing any key the DE is restored, but the screen has never turned off.
I searched the forum and all solutions seemed related to DPMS and xscreensaver, but I have the former enabled and the latter not installed.
I'm on gnome, I have an nvidia card with proprietary drivers and I tried on two different monitors.
Any idea? Thanks

Quick update.
I installed vbetool and with
sudo vbetool dpms force off
The monitor actually turns completely off. So it seems an xserver issue. Problem is that I can't seem to be able to turn the monitor back on by pressing a key or moving the mouse.
Any suggestion?

Since the nvidia drivers were complaining about missing acpi socket I tried to install the acpid, but still no luck.
I can't believe I'm the only one with this issue

one last update. I noticed that after a reboot the screen actually goes to sleep the very first time, but all subsequent times the backlight doesn't turn off. very frustrating.

disabling Displayport v1.2 (falling back to 1.1a) on my monitors gives back the monitor sleep
I can't set this to SOLVED because not all monitor firmwares let you disable DP 1.2
