I've followed the directions on this wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus and I understand that it says there is currently no solution, but my case is pretty severe and I haven't read of anyone else having problems as bad as mine. I have a second monitor connected to my Lenovo z580 laptop via HDMI. I was using bumblebee before but the speed improvements I was actually getting were pretty minimal (most of the time it was faster to run things on the intel card. In fact, primusrun would lead most things to crash or exhibit strange behavior.)
To make things clear, I would much prefer using solely the discrete card.
I decided to try the alternative outlined in the wiki article above in order to switch to using just the nvidia card hoping it would help speed things up. Programs are actually using the Nvidia card (yay!) but I've also run into a lot of issues. I'm hoping it's just a problem with the way I have things set up. It feels like kind of a mess all in all. I've searched around online for quite a while now, but nothing seems to show up for people with a similar set up as mine.
Problems / Strangeness that might give a clue to what's going on:

When running any graphics intensive app I get severe mouse/input lag
The nvidia-settings manager doesn't actually see my two monitors, only the virtual monitor that is specified in xorg.conf (is this an actual problem?) In addition, the gnome display manager sees both monitors but X11 will crash if I attempt to reorient them (but only sometimes!). Examples of what I'm describing: Gnome Display Manager and Nvidia Settings Manager
glxgears, gives a high and unstable FPS:

Using compton (seems to be a popular fix) -- doesn't seem to help.
The fix outlined here (force-composition-pipeline via nvidia-settings) -- When trying this once it caused the virtual monitor to be enabled and changed the resolution of both displays along with some other weirdness. However, I did get glxgears to report a stable 60fps--seems promising! But, of course, when trying to enable it for any of the real displays, it now quietly does nothing.
This fix (to be honest I have no idea what it does -- it doesn't really seem to work at all either!)
