[Solved] Unable to get sound working

Hello!

Well, I installed Arch and now I'm trying to get everything working. One of the few things that I'm not getting to work is the sound. My actual setup is one HDMI output (I barely use this one) and one usb wireless headset (My main sound output device), but I'm not being able to get sound in neither of them.

I already unmuted the master channel with both alsamixer and amixer.

[kuro@ArchKuro ~]$ amixer sset Master unmute
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 42
  Mono: Playback 38 [90%] [-6.00dB] [on]

when I run a speaker test, it seems to work correctly, but I'm not getting any sound.

[kuro@ArchKuro ~]$ speaker-test -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.29

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 16384
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 1024
was set buffer_size = 16384
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.652056
 0 - Front Left

Here is my arecord -l output (being the card 2 the output that I want to make work, and card 3 my main microphone for input sound)

[kuro@ArchKuro ~]$ arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: VT2020 Analog [VT2020 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 2: VT2020 Alt Analog [VT2020 Alt Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: Headset [Logitech G930 Headset], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 3: Mic [Samson Meteor Mic], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Sorry for the stupid question, but I don't really know what is failing and is probably something dumb. Feel free to ask for more outputs if you need them.

Re: [Solved] Unable to get sound working

Have you added yourself to the audio group? And if you often switch between sound outputs, something like pulseaudio+pavucontrol can be useful: you can clearly see where the sound is routed to

Re: [Solved] Unable to get sound working

You never play to the USB, default device is your analog card, what happens if you do

speaker-test -Dhw:2 -c2

You should look at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … sound_card or install pulseaudio as mentioned above, and use pavucontrol to switch the streams around

Re: [Solved] Unable to get sound working

Yes, I added myself to the audio group.

[kuro@ArchKuro ~]$ groups kuro
wheel audio storage power users

I don't really need to switch. I use the hdmi like one time every two or three months, so I don't really care if I need to lock the sound to the headsets. I installed pulseaudio + pulseaudio volume control (I'm more familiar with it because I'm used to it)

In fact, something weird happened. When I slide the headset volume in the pulseaudio volume control, I can hear the indicator of the volume going up and down, but I can't hear anything else. In the same pulseaudio I can see that some programs are using sound (like chromium) but the headset for some reason is not receiving it.

I'm going to look about the pulseaudio config, I think the problem is there.

EDIT: Ok, I solved it. I changed the headsets to digital stereo from analog stereo, then I got the option to change the chromium output to the headsets instead of the built-in audio (and blasted my ears in the process)

I knew that It was going to be something stupid, but I'm glad that I was able to solve it.
