xsession-errors file filling up with libva info messages

I have searched and searched the Internet looking for a way to inhibit these messages.  Everything appears to be, I could be wrong though, and the file is growing and growing.

Here is a sample

libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_38
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
libva info: VA-API version 0.38.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so

I tried this in /etc/environment
VDPAU_LOG=0
and
export VDPAU_LOG=0
in .bashrc

Any ideas on how to stop these messages?
