Dim the screen past `xbacklight=1` level?

This has already been discussed on a thread some two years ago. I am posting this again, as there are no solutions in that thread and also because posting there would prolly considered necrobumping.

I feel the lowest brightness level in xbacklight is still too bright while working at night with no surrounding/background lighting. I don't have faintest idea as to how to approach this issue.

Redshift doesn't exactly lower the brightness, not that I expect it to.

After you've hit the lowest brightness the only thing you can adjust is the screen colors being used. Grey on black should be darker, but blue on dark blue would also be darker than the defaults. Try adjusting screen colors.
