Black screen when switching to TTY from X with nvidia-340xx driver

Hi all,

I have a fresh install of Arch Linux (4.1.6-1-ARCH) on a MacBook Pro ("6,6", late 2009).

The MBP 6,6 has an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (as confirmed by lspci | grep VGA).

I was able to install the nvidia-340xx package along with nvidia-340xx-libgl (per suggestion of the NVIDIA wiki page). I was also able to successfully install Xfce4.

I have the system configured so it boots to a TTY and I must manually invoke X. I can boot and login without a problem, as well as invoke the default X session (with startx) or Xfce4 (with startxfce4). When I start X, I see the NVIDIA splash screen, and within Xfce4 I can access the NVIDIA X Server Settings application (which confirms version 340.76 of the driver is installed and functioning).

The problem I am experiencing is once X is running, I cannot get back to a terminal. If I quit X or try to switch to a virtual terminal, the screen remains completely black. The system is not frozen, however (if I'm switching from X to a virtual TTY I can switch back to X, or if I outright quit I can re-run the command from the blank screen and get back into the GUI). I have tried running completely with default settings, as well as with settings generated by nvidia-xconfig -- in both cases, I am able to successfully get into X but have the same problem when getting back to a terminal.

This issue does not occur if I remove the nvidia-340xx package. (but then, of course, I'm running without the driver).

When I experience the problem (via switching to a virtual terminal), my Xorg.0.log file shows:

[ 1177.581] (II) device control: off
[ 1178.699] (II) systemd-logind: got pause for 13:70

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you!

Re: Black screen when switching to TTY from X with nvidia-340xx driver

Update (and gentle bump):

I have discovered this issue also occurs outside the scope of X -- e.g., it happens if I suspend the system with "systemctl suspend" and resume. The screen remains totally black, but the system is responsive. Like the X issue above, suspending does seem to work correctly if the nvidia-340xx package is not installed.

This is starting to sound an awful lot like this thread. sad

Any help is appreciated. Thanks again.

Alt+F2 will get you a new tty, from there maybe you can kill some processes , kill X and last launch back the virtual console on tty0(the last step I don't know how to do so Sorry).

or if a virtual console is all what you want then just switch to another tty.

In either way, why do you want to switch back to the console ?

The problem also occurs when switching to a virtual terminal or suspending the system. So, even if I were to want to stay in my window session perpetually, I'd still completely blind if I needed to switch to TTY at any point.

Re: Black screen when switching to TTY from X with nvidia-340xx driver

I have the same problem, switching to a TTY while using the `nvidia` drivers results in a blank screen. I tried using the `nomodeset` options as described at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 0#p1404750, but no luck and the problem is the same. I'm on a MacBook Pro 11,5.
