evolution lockup when opening email

Until yesterday my evolution was working fine, but now when I try to open certain messages and it tries to "format" them (they never display) evolution locks up and eventually crashes. I've tried uninstall/reinstall. I'd rather not remove .evolution as I have important mail that is only on my local system, and I'm not sure if that will solve the problem. I've gotten two errors at command line when it locks up:

*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x08943958 ***

and:

*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x0864e1a0 ***

I'm not sure what to try next. I've tried installing thunderbird but it doesn't seem to pick up that evolution is there to try to import data. Any suggestions?

i was able to copy my inbox over to thunderbird for the time being...but i'd still prefer to use evolution.

for the curious, to move over my inbox i just:

cp ~/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox ~/.thunderbird/x9exn2ug.default/Mail/Local Folders/Inbox

obviously, x9exn2ug.default is likely to be different on other systems.
