I plugged an USB device, and after that my PC freezed. Then I restarted and I realized that there is no sound in VLC any more. I could see this error message on the console output:
cannot open ALSA device "default": No such file or directory
However I had sound in my Opera browser, when playing a youtube video.
Then I made a full system upgrade, hoping that helps with sound problem, but then sound disappeared completely.
I have no clue what to do.

I plugged another soundcard besides the original one, and fortunately problem has been solved. No sound in VLC because of:

Discard all sound sample was accidentally set.

However still there are no notification sounds in applications, as skype pidgin, etc.
Looks like audio output is redirected by default to "Discard all samples" or "capture". What to do? Where can I set?

Use pavucontrol and make sure the correct device is set as default, install pulseaudio-alsa and the alsa-plugins packages, post some actually relevant information
aplay -l
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

My PC had some other problem too: I had to switch it on usually about 10-15 times to start properly. Now it turned out if I remove one of the memory moduls, then it starts immediately AND I have notification sounds in applications and browsers too. However -512 MB of memory.
