MATLAB Text Display Error

Hi all,

I'm having a strange issue on my new install of arch on a new laptop (Asus UX305LA) where the text display for MATLAB GUI elements is showing black boxes instead of the actual text. However, sometimes when resizing, the text turns legible but is very sensitive to window sizing. I'm running i3 (which works well with MATLAB on my other NVIDIA laptop).

Everything else on the system that I've seen is working perfectly.

Any leads on where I can start to solve this?

Thanks,

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

I am having the exact same issue (running i3) but I am using a Lenovo T450s. My classmate however, who runs Arch + i3 on a Samsung laptop does _not_ have this issue.

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

In order to help you I need you to answer these questions :
1-what WM/DE are you using ? and what WM/DE does the Nvidia laptop have ?
2-what graphics card do you have ?
3-what's the model of the motherboard of the other laptop(the one that has nvidia) ?
I suspect either you're using a desktop environment that uses 3D acceleration exclusively(like KDE) on an integrated graphics card  or you have some font issue, I would see what fonts the other laptop have and install it one by one and try to see if this is the problem.

Also -though I suspect it would be useful- post /var/log/Xorg.0.log .

1. I am running i3wm, but on the system both Gnome and Cinnamon are installed.
2. Intel's internal graphics.
(3. That's for virati to answer.)

Regarding 1. when I use Gnome I do not get the same issue but instead get font issues only occasionally. What bothers me the most though is that the computer I'm currently using (workstation, running Arch + i3wm) runs Matlab without any issues.

I cannot post /var/log/Xorg.0.log atm since I do not have the laptop at hands.

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

I'm having the same problem! This is the only other case of the problem that I've been able to find.

I just installed Matlab on my Lenovo Yoga 3 14". I'm running Arch and i3 wm. Matlab works just fine in gnome (which is also installed), but with i3 it displays text like the picture posted.

My video card is:

[darsor@yogahost ~]$ lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics (rev 09)

I've got xf86-video-intel updated.

Here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

Have you tried to change the window mode to floating? Mod+Shift+Space by default.

Still no luck. I also tried installing the infinality font package, but I still have the problem.

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

Likewise having this same exact problem, also on an Asus Zenbook UX305LA. So evidently it has something to do with the hardware/vide drivers. I have also noticed it happens with the Dell VPN client which my school uses. Interestingly, it does not happen with XFCE desktop environment, so for now my solution is to use XFCE whenever I wish to use Matlab. I am also using SLiM WM if that is of any consequence.

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

Same problem here! The gui is almost unusable!

Setup 1( have the issue)
Intel graphics(broadwell celeron mobile)
awesome

Setup 2(have the issue)
Intel graphics(HD 530)
awesome+gnome (both have the issue)

Setup 3(don't have the issue)
770 GTX
awesome

User config files are identical(rc.lua,.zlogin,.zshrc...), I'm too lazy to tweak for each system.

Seems like the intel graphics driver is at fault?

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

I had the same problem on openbox and I actually could fix it by activating "Use antialiasing to smooth desktop fonts" in Preferences -> Matlab -> Fonts and restarting matlab. Don't ask why or how that could have possibly worked though, but it did for me smile

Re: MATLAB Text Display Error

Being related, has anyone found a workaround for this issue in GNOME?
