GRip . That's what I use. Very simple interface, support for lame mp3 encoder, oggenc, flac encoding, can fill the tags, etc. My personal favourite.

I prefer Sound-Juicer
You might also want to want to look into banshee and rhythmbox, I belive they can both rip and transfer songs to an ipod.

If you do not want to use gnome (and install unnecessary dependencies), you may have a look at Asunder (in AUR).

at the moment it just comes up with
/usr/bin/grip (no such file or directory)
thanks

try 'pacman -Ql grip' to see which files the package provides. The executable should be listed also.

it's /opt/gnome/bin/grip

the /opt/*/bin dirs are not added to $PATH by default, afaik. You could add them in /etc/profile, and then add
source /etc/profile
To .xinitrc or something. That's what I did [/code]

If gnome is installed, you should have something like gnome.sh in /etc/profile.d/
/etc/profile and all the files in /etc/profile.d/ are normally loaded (I don't know exactly when actually). You don't have to load them explicitely.

They are loaded when you log in or they can be loaded manually ("source /etc/profile" - but then the path is only loaded in the terminal you run the command...)

í don't seem to be able to extract using grip...?!?!
it worked perfectly with a CD which i had burnt mp4 files, but as soon as i put my tom waits CD in (or any other 'proper' audio CD) Grip just doesn't see the Cd (an dwhile I'm on it- neither does xmms...)
any ideas, seeing as i'd like to get my rather large cd collection onto my ipod before i leave in few days... please!?!?
thanks
