Hi all,
just a curiosity. Why we do not move arch on a public git repository (as gentoo for example) ?
I guess it will be easier to contribute to the distro and more people could help.

I put at button on it. Yes. I wish to press it, but I'm not sure what will happen if I do. (Gune | Titan A.E.)

Github is not synonymous with Git.

Github is not synonymous with Git.
Nor is github necessarily public.
CPU-optimized Linux-ck packages @ Repo-ck • AUR packages • Zsh and other configs

... nor free as in freedom.
Also, Arch is not exposed to problems on third-party web platforms. If something breaks, the devs/admins can fix it on their own, whereas on Github, all you can do is wait.
EDIT Also, the Gentoo folks seem to have their git repository here. The "gentoo" repository on Github is just a mirror. Probably for people who don't know the difference between git and Github.

Am I missing something? I thought that Arch was already using a public git repository (actually there is one sub-repository for each project: https://projects.archlinux.org/). Maybe, you cannot open directly a pull/merge request like on github, but if you want to contribute you can always open a new bug report/feature request on flyspry, describe what is the problem and attach your patches.
--edit: typo... grrr!

Yes, although note that not everything is made public: some parts are hidden by .gitignore files, one notable case is the wiki configuration.

That is only logical. You do not publish configuration files that contain passwords.

I don't want to hijack the thread, even though the OP seems solved, however LocalSettings.php contains a lot more settings than just passwords, whose values would have been interesting to know in many occasions, and which would also be interesting to discuss for changes. It would be very easy to split the file between a public and a hidden part, as proposed in FS#35545.
