Screen flickering, Toshiba Chromebook 1st gen, KDE

[update] the machine became unusable after a while and wouldn't open any of my applications. after a couple of reboots and failing to figure out what the issue was or how to fix it, I pulled the plug and did a fresh install of arch, this time went with xfce, which is more appropriate for my machine. but boy, it takes time to set things up and troubleshoot when you have an unorthodox machine. anyway, the result is, as always with arch, super fast and responsive. got a working machine with 600 packages and hoping this time it won't break beyond my knowledge.

btw, the sound troubleshoot of chromebooks in wiki does not work. for those on the same ship do this and avoid several hours of tinkering:

#Creat .asoundrc in home and put the following:

pcm.!default {
        type hw
        card 1
}

ctl.!default {
        type hw
        card 0
}

I started experiencing flickering about 2-3 weeks ago; the strange thing is that if I change sth in "display and monitor/compositor" (e.g. setting rendering backend to opengl 3) and apply, it is fixed... until next reboot. the odd part is that it doesn't make any difference which setting I change, I just have to apply it for the flickering to get fixed and do it after every reboot. does anyone know what might be causing this bug, and how to make it persist between reboots?
thanks
