Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

After updating from gnome 3.16 to 3.18 I experienced problems that I thought were similar to other posts -- i.e. unable to login.  What I found was that I was able to login and even use the system but only with the keyboard and not my usb wireless mouse.  The mouse cursor appears and moves with the mouse (even waking from screen blanking and changing shape in Firefox) but clicks are totally ignored.  I am using the nvidia driver with WaylandEnable=false uncommented in /etc/gdm/custom.conf and the system is a desktop.  I have tried several different wireless keyboard/mouse combinations with the same results.  I also noticed a large number of Cogl-WARNINGs via journalctl -e.  Any ideas?

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

unfortunately I have the same problem since I upgraded to 3,18 (running a HP8530W). Any mouse clicks (touchpad or USB mouse) are ignored. Clicks are only recognized if you make a window active (such as when you are opening the terminal trough the gnome shell and alt-tab to that window), though re-sizing or relocating that window is impossible. In addition, I think that my system is a lot slower (SSD, but everything takes ages)

I am running the NVIDEA 340 legacy driver, are you running the same driver?

A snippet from my journal does indeed come up with a lot of Cogl warnings ( and later a GLib-GObject warning)

The main two error sources seem to be the driver/gl/cogl-clip-stack-gl.c:463 and the driver/gl/cogl-framebuffer-gl.c:1022. Both of them are repeated endlessly it seems.

Don' t know how to solve this issue, though.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

After 2 days I gave up and downgraded.  I was *very* impressed how easy it was with the Arch Rollback Machine.  Reviewing my journal, I can see that I was getting the same errors.  I guess I'll just have to be patient about upgrading...

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

I checked reddit, and there are some with the same issue.
I'd keep an eye on the next point release: GNOME will release 3.18.1 next Wednessday; a few days after Arch should have the new packages as well.

Same issue here - funny thing is, that the Cinnamon panel too doesn't respond to any clicks.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

just curious, are you using the NVIDIA 340xxx legacy driver? As this bug does not hit everyone I suspect that it is somesort of driver related issue.
There have also been bugs that some screens are suddenly 90deg. tilted.

Ah.. as eda2z mentioned: lesson learned about wanting to upgrade to fast. smile

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

Simthadim is definitely onto something concerning the nvidia driver -- which my desktop uses.  I also have a System76 gazelle (Intel graphics) and I just performed a complete pacman update.  Except for a number of shell-extensions being disabled there are no apparent errors -- i.e. the mouse clicks are recognized.  Since I have a bunch of free time (being retired is nice) I will probably try switching from nvidia to nouveau and see what happens.

It definitely was the nvidia driver.  After switching to nouveau and updating, I am running 3.18 with a mouse!!

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

Apparently all is not well.  The mouse works with the latest upgrade and nouveau but ... not forever.  After using the system for the last several hours mouse usage has caused the system to lock-up at various points -- in firefox, in tweak tool, in geary -- and this is a hard lock-up since I cannot ssh in from another machine.  I may have to go back to 3.16 and stay there.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

Holding steady with gnome 3.16 and nvidia otherwise there are 2 separate problems:  1)  gnome 3.18 and nvidia do not play well together; 2) nouveau and my particular graphics card GT240 can't get along.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

I'll try to update my laptop somewhere later this week (once the 3.18.1 packages a released for Arch). Will report here if this release fixes the NVIDIA issue.

I've had the same problem with cinnamon, for me the problem was clutter-1.24.2-1. After an downgrade to clutter-1.22.4-1 it works fine.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

Thanks for the suggestion Brechdurch but it didn't give me a usable system.  I ended up with a blank login screen from gdm although the mouse cursor was displayed.  Stopping gdm and keying in startx gave me the gnome screen about something going wrong, all extensions being disabled and only allowing me to logout -- which I could do with the mouse.  Oh well, back to 3.16.

Not seeing this with cinnamon and the nvidia 355 package so is everyone affected using nvidia 340 legacy?
Only other obvious difference is I use lightdm instead of gdm.
Also is there a bug tracking this anywhere?

Just upgraded to gnome 3.18 on my nvidia desktop.   I get to the GDM login screen, but it takes a very long time to get to my desktop (if I get there at all).  I have KDE installed as well, so I have a backup, at least.

[edit] Running nvidia 355.11-3

You need to hit Escape when it hangs at that gray screen in GDM and it will continue logging in. It's a bug, but only when using NVIDIA drivers.

(@Wilberfan)
Please, let' s keep this thread organised. Since your problem is of a completely different type than the issue of the topic starter, please create your own topic or continue in another one that has a comparable issue (there are 2 already).

Back on topic:
Upgraded my computer to Gnome 3.18.1 (first point release), no fix so far.
Either a NVIDIA bug or a bug on gnome's end. I' m filing a bug report @ GNOME.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

The original problem was caused by me and has nothing to do with nvidia/arch/gnome -- egg on my face!!  I did a bunch more investigating and realized that I was using the wrong nvidia driver.  I was using 304xx and should have been using 340xx.  Once I installed the correct driver I was able to successfully upgrade to 3.18 -- with only the "grey screen/esc" problem.  Good luck to everyone who actually needs the 304xx driver.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

@eda2z
Just because of you I checked the driver of my GPU and I too should have been using the 340xx series all along. Installed the 340xx package and now everything is resolved (well.. it introduced new bugs related to the wmc and GDM, but the mouse is back).

@all,
I think it is due to the nvidia-304xx-libgl package. Gnome-session seems to be buggy with that one. You could try to use the mesa-libgl and see if that solves the issue (for now). Be sure to file a bugreport on gnome.com because that's the only way they will know that it's something on their end.

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

Actually I could simply update to nvidia-340. I thought nvidia-304 was the last driver supporting my 9600GT, but I was wrong. The 9xxx series is supported up to nvidia-340. It's also the last one that supports the 8xxx series.

Try this (and skim trough this topic.... because I already mentioned what the error source is in an earlier post wink )

Same issue using Cinnamon. Checked it with Gnome and panel is neither clickable. I am using NVIDIA-304xx. I have installed XCFE and LXDE and I am working properly at the moment.

Anyone has tried with testinng nvidia-340xx-340.46 package?

Re: Mouse clicks not being recognized after upgrade to gnome 3.18

I switched to nvidia 340.xx as it is still supporting my GeForce 9200. The Cinnamon and Gnome menu panels are clickable now.
