systemctl --user Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory

Hi!

I realise that this error message seems to be quite common but I've gone through all the threads I've found but I can't find the solution for this problem.

The problem I'm having is that my user run services are not working.

When I check systemctl --user I get

$ systemctl --user
Failed to list units: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1

If I run it as root:

$ sudo systemctl --user
Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory

I read in some post that $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR should be set but for me it is unset. I tried to do a system update with pacman -syu hoping it would solve the problem but It did not. I am currently running 4.2.3-1-ARCH
with systemd 227.

Journalctl -b -x seems to show all kinds of errors but I'm guessing they are related to the problem with systemd although I don't understand them.

Another (maybe related) problem I'm having is that when I start my computer I normally type in my username and password in the TTY1 terminal after which X is started automatically due to my .bashrc:

 [[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx

Now however I get a message about how it could not open display "default display", but if I type startx manually, it starts.

Also I should mention that I use ldap to login and I have uid 10000. The useraccount exists with the same uid in /etc/passwd. I also have another test account with uid 1000 that seems to login in without any problems and for that account systemctl --user seems to be working fine although that user does not have anything other that defaults configured.

Would appreciate any help to solve this issue!

Re: systemctl --user Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory

Related? https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/46374
I use startx (xorg-xinit package).
Some dbus erros like gnome-terminal won't open, solved for me copying /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to .xinitrc

Does not seem to be related to the bug but I found what might have been the issue.

I had a systemd unit file for emacs as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Em … stemd_unit
located in ~/.config/systemd/user/emacs.service
When I removed it and rebooted the problem with startx and systemctl --user was gone.

So now the problem is that I can't run the emacs service. Is the method for adding the systemd unit outdated and can I add it in some other way?
