I don't use abiword much, buit today I had reason to do so for the first time in several weeks on this 32 bit box which is updated daily. I find that whether I open an existing document or commence a new one, tthe text and cursor flicker. On new documents this seems to affect the entire thing, on existing ones it is confined to the first paragraph of the text. I appreciate that this might have a variety of causes, but am wondering to begin with whether anyone else has the same issue?

I have. I'm not sure when this started, since I had switched over to LibreOffice and only reinstalled Abiword last night. On my installation, the flickering affects the entire left border of the document, as well as about the upper 20 percent, meaning the borders and text, making it next to impossible to focus on writing.
I haven't had time yet to file a bug report, but that's on my agenda as soon as I clear a little time.

Many tbanks cjazz. I don't seem to have the left border issue, but I do have a black band at the top of the page. That does ot flicker, but I am not sure it should be there. My use is so occasional that I would not be an enthusiastic bug submiitter / helper. I will gratefully leave that to you.

I have the same problem. A workaround for me is to use the abiword-gtk2-version from AUR.

same problem for me, did system update today and have Abiword 3.0.1
flickering remains.

The flickering went away for me with abiword 3.0.1-5.

Everytime I try out a 3.x version of abiword I also experience annoying flickering. So then I switch back to version 2.8.6-9 ahhh! much better.
