Sound doesn't work after kernel update etc.[SOLVED]

I did a pacman -Su (just to see what'd happen) and it downloaded a new kernel and a lot of other stuff. I rebooted and now my sound doesn't work. I get the following message:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I have the:

Linux version 2.6.16-ARCH (root@Wohnung) (gcc version 4.0.3) #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Apr 6 08:28:36 CEST 2006

kernel. Any ideas?

/Richard

ps. I tried: pacman -Ss kernel, pacman [THE_KERNEL_WITH_7] but it wasn't found in database. Coming to think about it it named some configuration files with a Warning but I don't know which.

Re: Sound doesn't work after kernel update etc.[SOLVED]

ahh,
then remove the oss entries in /etc/modprobe.conf
and all other alsa stuff, if you used alsaconf to setup sound

Re: Sound doesn't work after kernel update etc.[SOLVED]

Yeah I use alsa. So I just:

pacman -R alsa-[PREFIXES]

or what?

Re: Sound doesn't work after kernel update etc.[SOLVED]

212301/home/riwa/# pacman -R alsa-lib
error: this will break the following dependencies:
  alsa-lib: is required by arts
  alsa-lib: is required by esd
  alsa-lib: is required by gstreamer0.10-alsa
  alsa-lib: is required by libao
  alsa-lib: is required by libsndfile
  alsa-lib: is required by xfce4-mixer

I don't think I have any more alsa-packages now (don't know how to check it though). I'm gonna try to reboot and see what happens.

There weren't any alsa-entries (left anyway). I commented out the (only) two line below OSS.

Re: Sound doesn't work after kernel update etc.[SOLVED]

Well I don't get the error message any more, but it still doesn't work. Also the were a bunch of error messages while booting the system regarding modules. At least it boots quick!

Re: Sound doesn't work after kernel update etc.[SOLVED]

Well since I get them while booting there's no way for me to see them (unless the ouput is saved somewhere). The only thing I know is that there's like 10-15 similiar in a row and that the speak about Module not found or Error loading module or something like that.

[EDIT]
IE, I can't see them since it goes really fast during boot-up

I noticed at least two new files that caught my eye in /etc called rc.conf.pacnew and modprobe.conf.pacnew. I remember that these files were created with the kernel update.

Re: Sound doesn't work after kernel update etc.[SOLVED]

Yeah I'm pretty sure I added myself earlier. I got my sound card working for like an hour, then I upgraded the kernel and bam! Back to square one...

However echo $GID doesn't work.
