Login Problem

hi everybody,
i've just installed arch after an year on ubuntu and i started to use kde (and i love it).
Unfortunately i have a little problem cause after i put my password and i press enter the monitor of my laptop (hp pavilion dv5) seems like an untuned television for some seconds.
can you me please?

I can not explain why your monitor flickers. What display manager are you using? Have you tried another? Have you tried to log in from a terminal and start X manually?
Maybe these tips can help you to solve the problem on your own, or maybe others can give you an explanation if they get more information about what you have tried.

The above questions are very good - I'd add to these also a request to know about your graphics hardware: what kind of card is it (lspci output will show it); what graphics driver are you using.

Also, what does an untuned television look like to you?  In otherwords, which specific symptoms do you see.  Is it, for example, the right output but distorted or resized to a particular part of the screen?  Or does it appear properly sized by with static or visual noise?  Or is there tearing/missalignment where a portion of the screen (e.g. top or bottom half) seems to be shifted?  Or is there a rapid sliding/scanning of the screen (usually would be right to left, but could be vertical as well)?
