Special <Font Face="Symbol"> Characters are wrong

Good day.
My problem is wrong rendering of special <Font Face="Symbol"> characters in browsers.

The example of these characters you can see on this image:
http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/SYMBchrc.gif

They are not what they are supposed to be. For example "<=" symbol is printed as " £ ".

The problem is both in chromium and firefox, checked it on windows in virtual machine - works fine there.
Tried to install ttf-ms-fonts, fonts became worse, but it didn't solve the problem.

locale -a
C
en_US
en_US.iso88591
en_US.utf8
POSIX
ru_RU
ru_RU.iso88595
ru_RU.koi8r
ru_RU.utf8
russian

The example of a page where symbols are rendered wrong:

Re: Special <Font Face="Symbol"> Characters are wrong

I found this page
http://www.alanwood.net/demos/symbol.html

It is written there that using <font face="Symbol"> is a bad practice and should be avoided, so the problem isn't actually in my system.
But maybe there is a way to fix it somehow for me?

Installed "Symbol" font from Windows, but it didn't work. Also, for some reason, "Symbol" font was deleted from ttf-ms-fonts. I wonder why.
