firefox + alsa: video but no audio for html5 video

I have fully functional audio in other applications (e.g. mplayer), so the issue would appear to be with firefox.
gstreamer and related are installed, but I have no audio output from firefox on websites like youtube.

I've barked up the trees referenced in the wiki however nothing seems to have fixed this.

just for fun, tested chromium: no issues there.
