gnome-font-properties crashes when selecting bitmap fonts

If I try to select certain bitmap fonts in gnome-font-properties (e.g. snap), the application crashes with the standard Gnome error message:

The Application "gnome-font-properties" has quit unexpectedly.

You can inform the developers of what happened to help them fix it.  Or you can restart the application right now.

The funny thing is, other bitmap fonts (e.g smoothansi) don't trigger any crash. Also, the crash produces no console output at all.

For what it's worth, I'm using plain old X, but I've got the necessary stuff for XGL installed:

glproto-cvs
mesa-cvs
glitz-cvs
xgl-cvs
cairo-cvs
compiz-quinn-cvs

What's going on here?
